MARK YOUR CALENDARS

March is a great time to start doing some Spring Cleaning! Back by popular demand, St. Daniel is having a Church-wide Rummage Sale, Friday, May 3rd thru Saturday, May 4th. We are timing it this year to run in coordination with the M-15 Rummage Sale, which goes for 46 miles from Clarkston to Bay City .

Starting Monday, March 18th, please drop off your items at the Cushing Center during working hours:

Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please NO TV’s or computers, NO clothing (except clean baby clothes), and NO bedding/beds or any broken items.

We are looking for our wonderful volunteers to help again this year! We really had a lot

of fun setting up and working the sale. Please consider helping out either by donating your time and/or donating items for us to sell!

As we begin the long journey through Lent, we read a story about Jesus at the very beginning of his ministry. There is no claim in this passage it being historically authentic; there were no witnesses to record the events. Instead, the story’s message pertains to us as we strive to live our lives in faithfulness to God. This Jesus, the one who we proclaim as Savior, as seated at the right hand of God, indeed as God incarnate—this Jesus was tempted, just as we are. When Jesus enters the desert to pray and fast, he experiences what it means to be human. To be human is to be wonderfully made by God, but human nature is prone to neglect that truth and to strive for something else, to be less than we are, to be less than wonderful.

Jesus, too, in this narrative, was tempted to be less tan he was. And his temptations were similar to those that confront us as well. We desire security, the knowledge that our needs will be met. So we purchase “insurance” against the inevitable, finding it too difficult, too foolishly to trust solely in the promises of God. At other times we relish our own authority thinking of ourselves as powerful and respected, and enjoying every opportunity to wield power over others, whether children, students, coworkers or clients. For some of us, the greatest temptation is to feel a sense of religious superiority, a conviction that God is on our side, at the expense of those who look, think or act differently than we do.

Lent offers us the opportunity to confront our own “devils,” to look honestly into our hearts, without recoiling but rather in sorrow and repentance for the attitudes found there that compromise our potential to be truly human, made in the image and likeness of God. Entering the desert time of Lent, when little grows and refreshment is lacking, is not easy; we need guidance. We can take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus too had desert experiences. We place our trust in one who has been there before us.

In Lent our Gospel reading move from desert and transfiguration to finally passion, cross and death.

Please join the weekly Sunday by Sunday group any Wednesday at 10:00 am as we pray with, reflect on, and study the upcoming Sunday scriptures. Lenten Challenge:

40 Days ± 40 Items Admit it: We all could stand to

rid ourselves of some “stuff.” You know … That blouse you haven’t worn in five years; those toys your kids have outgrown; those extra sheets or towels just taking up space in your linen closet. Lent is traditionally a time of “giving up.” So why not de-clutter your life and give some things up at the same time by participating in the “40 Days – 40 Items Lenten Challenge.” The concept is simple: Each day of Lent, remove one item from your house that you no longer wear or need, and put it into a trash bag (or box, if the items are larger). At the end of the 40 days, donate those items to our local St. Vincent de Paul store. They’ll benefit those who can really use them! For a real win-win situation, put any and all bags in the SVdP bins at the end of the parking lot; we actually get “credit” (store vouchers) for donations made to the bins! Boxed items should be donated directly to the store, on Dixie Hwy. To get you started, you’ll find “40 Days – 40 Items” bags in the church and Cushing Center. What can you give up? Feel free to post pix on our parish Facebook page!

Christian Service Opportunities

Dine to Donate to SVdP!

Our parish St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP)

conference helps those in need with rent, utility, and other emergency assistance. The need is great, and sometimes the funding is pretty thin. Andiamo Trattoria in Clarkston is sponsoring a fundraiser for our conference.

The fundraiser will take place on March 1 - 31 (yes, the whole month!). A portion of the customer’s total bill at lunch or dinner will go to help our conference help those in need.

NOTE: Please bring a copy of the fundraiser flyer with you to the restaurant on to give to your server for an Andiamo’s donation. The flyer is available in today’s bulletin, the church gathering space, the Cushing Center, and on our parish Facebook page. Check it out, and we hope to see YOU there!!!

Opportunity to Reach Out with Love

Each year, parishes within our Lakes

Vicariate take turns staffing the Hope Warming Center in Pontiac for an evening. This year, we are scheduled for the third week in March. There

will be a team of volunteers from St. Daniels sharing their time and talents on Friday, March 22nd.

This project involves: Preparing a hearty meal during the afternoon/early evening at the St. Daniel kitchen (2:00 to 5:30 p.m.); transporting the meal from our kitchen to HOPE (5:30 to 6:30 p.m.); setting up and serving the meal (6:15 to 9:30 p.m.); and providing other support as needed at the Warming Center (6:15 to 9:30 p.m.). Opportunities for youth service hours here in the St. Daniel kitchen, helping to clean up from 4:30 to approximately 6:30 p.m.

Encounter Lent with CRS Rice Bowl

During the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we encounter our neighbor through CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in- action program. It offers opportunities for your family to engage daily in the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. And, it’s an opportunity for us as a parish to come together as a community and reflect on what it means to live out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need.

During this first week of Lent we encounter Norma in Guatemala, who, as a young mother, supports her family and shares her skills with her community.

Reflect on the importance of family in your life. How can you contribute to support families in your community? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

Rice Bowls may be returned with the children in Faith Formation Classes during Holy Week, or brought to the 7:00 p.m. Mass on Holy Thursday, April 18.

Kudos Korner

A huge “thank you” to all who came out to Mr. B’s on February 21 for the Angels’ Place Race Fundraiser, and on February 28 for the St. Vincent de Paul

“Dine to Donate” evening. Your purchases helped two very worthy organizations to help others, and the fellowship was awesome!

Also, heartfelt appreciation to parishioner Liz Deibel and Susan’s Hallmark on Dixie Highway near Maybee Road.

They recently hosted an Act of Kindness Food Drive in the store, then donated non-perishable food items to St. Daniel’s to help our neighbors in need.

SEDER MEAL

The queson of Catholic churches and schools having Seder meals was addressed by the Archdiocese of Detroit. The reenactment of the Passover Seder is discouraged due to its religious nature and its appearance of being disrespec ul to our Jewish brothers and sisters.

Out of respect for the Jewish community and the effort Archbishop Vigneron has made to form trusng bonds with the rabbis in metropolitan Detroit, St. Dan’s will not be hosng a Seder meal.

A suggeson for Catholics to learn about the origins of Passover is to read the great story of Moses in the Book of Exodus (Chapters 1Ͳ14). It contains great drama! Then a2end the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday) where we celebrate the “passing over” of Jesus from death to life, which fulfills the Passover of the ancient Israelites. The Old Testament pracce was a foreshadowing of what Jesus would do ʹ atone for our sins and save us from spiritual death by being

“the [sacrificial Passover] Lamb of God.” Holy Thursday and Good Friday are full of references to Passover, so you will be able to connect the Jewish holy day with Jesus’ acons.

I hope that by reading Exodus and a2ending the Easter Triduum, your faith will be greatly enhanced!
