Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China

As of 30 September, a total of 1,607,825 cases of HFMD had been reported including 107 deaths in China for 2015. From 1 to 30 September, 180,074 cases was reported, similar to what was reported in August (n= 180,813). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 14 October, there were 366,479 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since March, weekly case numbers of HFMD have increased peaking in August. Since then, weekly case numbers have been in decline (Figure 2). For the period 8 to 14 October 2015, there were 5,447 cases reported, a 23.3%

decrease compared to the previous week (n=7,103). The most frequently identified viruses were Coxsackie virus A16 and A6.

Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong SAR (China)

As of 10 October, a total of 646 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in 2015, higher than for the same reporting period in 2014 (n=297). From 2 to 10 October, there were 26 cases of hospital admissions from sentinel sites. The cumulative number of cases remained higher compared to the same reporting period of 2012 and 2014 but lower than 2013 (Figure 3).

Macau SAR (China)

As of 18 October, 2,686 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR for 2015. 71 new cases were reported in the week ending 11 October. The number of cases is following the seasonal trend (Figure 4).

Singapore

As of 10 October, a total of 22,023 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore for 2015, higher than the number of cases reported in 2014 (n=17,322), for the same reporting period. From 4 to 10 October 2015, there were 431 cases of HFMD reported, which is similar to number of reported cases in the previous week (n=441). The number of cases is following the seasonal trend (Figure 5).

Viet Nam (No Update)

For the period 1 Jan to 6 September 2015, there were 32,415 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including 4 deaths. Compared with the same period in 2014, the cumulative number of reported cases is 40.3% lower. During week 38 (from 14 to 20 September 2015), there were 1,605 cases with no deaths reported from 57 of the 63 provinces. Approximately 70% of the cases are from the South. There is an increase of 317 cases (24.6%) compared with the previous week and in the past month, a substantial increase in cases has been reported.
