I t i s now recognized that there are two d i s t i n c t types o f Y e l l o w Fever i n humans, not d i f f e r i n g i n t h e i r c l i n i c a l f e a t u r e s but of q u i t e d i s t i n c t

epidemiolofTical • h a r a c t e r i s t i e s ,

from man t o man by the domestic d w e l l i n g mosquito - the Aëdes A e g y p t i , Yeilcw f e v e r i n man so t r a n s m i t t e d can assume epidemic p r o p o r t i o n s , depending on the d e n s i t y o f p o p u l a t i o n and o f the mosquito v e c t o r .

The other type i s the so c a l l e d nJungle" Yellm F e - ^ r , i n which man plays QTÙy an i n c i d e n t a l p a r t . The v i r u s i s t r a n s m i t t e d to mammalian i n l i a b i t a n t s o f the j u n g l e , e . g . monkeys, by a sylvsui mosquito v e c t o r , and i t i s only when man i s i n c l o s e contact with, the jungle t h a t ha may c o n t r a c t the disease by being b i t t e n by a v e c t o r i n f e c t e d by f e e d i n g on an i n f e c t e d jungle mammal such as the monkey. This type o f Yellow Fever i s not epidemic and unless A^des Aegypti o r other v e c t o r i s present i n h i s residence the disease cannot be t r a n s m i t t e d from man to other members of h i s f a m i l y r e s i d i n g w i t h h i m .

Turning t o the p r a c t i c a l i m p l i c a t i o n s of these two d i s t i n c t e p i d e m i o l o g i c a l e n t i t i e s i t i s at once obvious t h a t although urban Yellow Fever when present i s an immediate and d i r e c t menace by i n t e r n a t i o n a l t r a n s p o r t to other c o u n t r i e s vjhere c o n d i t i o n s permit o f the development o f Yellow Fever, Jvingle Yellow Fever i s not by any means so great a menace, though i t i s a p o t e n t i a l menace, and- should be given due c o n s i d e r a t i o n i n drawing up r e g u l a t i o n s f o r the c o n t r o l o f the spread o f epidemic d i s e a s e . No mention of Jungle Y e l l o w Fever i s made i n the present I n t e r n a t i o n a l S a n i t a r y R e g u l a t i o n s .
