O tipo de scanner e as suas características e funcionalidades são uma componente fulcral no processo de digitalização. Uma vez que, no hospital de Braga uma das razões pela qual ainda se pede o processo clínico em papel é a incapacidade dos scanners existentes digitalizarem a cores e exames de algumas especialidades como otorrinolaringologia e oftalmologia têm exames a cores, e exames longos como o CDI em cardiologia.
Existem três tipos de scanners no hospital de Braga: Utax P-5035i MFP
HP Scanjet 8270 Document Flatbed Scanner Fujitsu FI6110
70 O primeiro, Utax P-5035i MFP, é utilizado em todas as especialidades. Tem como características:

Estes três scanners, reúnem algumas das especificações retratadas no capítulo 3.1. Como a resolução, a especificação para imagem bitonal são 200 dpi e para imagem colorida 200 dipi. O Utax P-5035i MFP tem 600 x 600 dpi, Fujitsu FI6110 tem uma resolução de 50 a 600
dpi (ajustável
por incrementos de 1 dpi, 1200 dpi) e por último, HP Scanjet 8270 DocumentFlatbed Scanner tem uma resolução de 4800 dpi. O Fujitsu FI6110 tem a capacidade de digitalizar a cores, 24-bit, 8-bit, 4-bit, nas especificações do capítulo 3.1., a profundidade de bits para imagens coloridas é de 24 bits. Por outro lado, este scanner tem a opção de ler código de barras e capacidade de compressão sem perdas.
Para exames como o CDI, que se trata de exames longos, será necessário um scanner linear, que detêm o modo para documentos longos.
A informação clinica detém inúmeras especificidades, para se conseguir em pleno o acesso a toda a informação por meio digital é necessário digitalizar a informação retrospectiva. No entanto, para se digitalizar essa informação de forma a manter a visualização com detalhe, é necessário ter equipamentos apropriados a responder a todas as especificidades, tamanho, escala de cores, leitura de código de barras, entre outros. Para isso, é necessário haver um investimento em scanners e na compra de algumas especificidades, como tampas adaptadoras por exemplo.
