5.8 Identification du virus avec les techniques moléculaires : considérations épidémiologiques

Des milliers d’isolats de lyssavirus provenant d’êtres humains, d’animaux domestiques et d’animaux sauvages ont été caractérisés au moyen de techniques antigéniques et moléculaires et ont abouti à l’identification et à la classification de base des lyssavirus ainsi qu’à la démonstration que les isolats viraux d’une région géographique ou d’une espèce donnée ont des séquences génétiques uniques.

Dans la plupart des cas, ces différences peuvent être utilisées pour identifier le réservoir principal d’animaux (p. ex. chauve-souris, chien, renard, mangouste) et pour déduire la source d’infection lorsque des antécédents formels d’exposition font défaut (1, 2).
