[lang_en] In 1762, Goldoni bid farewell to Venice. His last comedy before his departure to Paris was entitled Una delle ultime sere di Carnevale (One of the last evenings of the Carnival) and was staged in the Teatro San Luca. The whole play rests upon an allegory between weaving and theatrical performance. To each weaving craft (designer, silk merchant, master weaver, workers), Goldoni associates a role in the process of staging and playwrighting (author, Venitian theater owners, company directors, comedians). This graceful and melancholic metaphor provides the starting point for an analysis of the numerous relationships linking text and textile in the modern era, between the 16th and the 18th century. These relationships are etymological, metaphorical and material at the same time. The masculine world of Venitian crafts is thus contrasted with the feminine world of embroidered or woven texts. Such texts adorned many objects and kept alive the memory of mythological narratives (the rivalry between Pallas and Arachne, for instance): in the bundle of the peddler, loving gifts and love ballads became one and the same. The needle thus made possible the literary career of women who were denied the use of the pen, considered to be subversive. While the analogy with weaving crafts allowed Goldoni to stage the constraints bearing upon theatrical practice, it also allowed the modern European lady to turn embroidery or tapestry – that is, the very arts that were supposed to symbolize her subordinate position – into an instrument of deviance with respect to prevailing norms.
