INTRODUcnON

The publication·African aocio-Economic Indlcatora"

aummuieillOCiai and economictrend.in the region. The prountiHUCiathe eighth in the scrica. It contains data for both 1990 and 1991 in accordance with &

recommendation of the Seventh Session of the Joint Conference of Afdcan P1annen. Statisticians and Demosraphen in March 1992. ThUI, this issueis a combioatioo of the lCparatepubticenons for each of the yean1990and1991.

In expanding the theme of the series, tbe ECA Slaliltiel Division has been attempting[0present a more comprehensive picture of economic, social and environmental conditions in Africa. Some supplementary tables on social and environment aspects have therefore beenllddedto thi. pUblication.

Thi. publication attempts to serve users who need a summary picture and information on recent trends for countries, SUb-regions and the continent as a whole.

Many indicators have therefore been presented in graphicalform. The publication African Socio-Economic Indicatorsthus aims at complementing the pure tabular format of country-specific data in the African Statistical Yearbookwhere each of the four parts is dedicated to just one sub-region.

Usen should consult the technical notes IUId table nOleswhen making comparisonsbetweensub-regionsand countries. Even though data have been compiled, wherever possible, in a format which facilitates international comparison, concepts and definitions of somest81istical series may differ SUbstantially from one country to another.

When data and graphs presented in this edition of African Socio-Economic lndlcators differ from the ccrreepcndmg data and graphs for the same years given in the eerller editions, it should be taken to reflect corrections or revisionsmade as a result of the receipt of

furth~r information. Therefore, they supersede the corresponding data and graphs published previously.

Datapresented in this volumecan heohtained on a micro-computer readable diskette against a charge.

The annual growth rate is the average annual percentage rate of population (total, urban) growth between two years, computed using the mid-year estimates and an exponential rate of increase.

Regarding the peeceetege of population in urban areas, U&Cl'Ishould be aware of different definitions used by countriee. The following example. illustrate the range: Algeria:aU communes having as chef-lieu either a city, a rural town or an urban agglomeration; Central African Republic: 20 principalcentres:Ghana: localities ofSOOOor more inhabitants; Senegal: agglomerations of 10,000 or more inhabitants.

Theage dependencyratio relates youths under IS yean of age and per liOns of 6S years and above to the population aged IS to 64 years of age. This indicft.tor showstherefore the number of dependents which each 100 person, in the productive age segment of the population have to support.

The economic dependency ratio relatesto the number of economically inactive to the number of economically active personl.

The totAl fertility rate is the average number of children thatwould be born per woman if she experiences no mortality and were eubject to a given set of age- Ip"ific fertility throughout her lifetime. The economically active POPulation comprises all employed and unemployed persons (including those seeking work for the first time). It covers employees, person. working on their own account, salaried employees, wage earners, unpaid family workers, members of producers' co-operativesand members of the armed forces.

The activity ratc iii defined as the ratio of the economically active popul&tion to the mtRI popelericn.

Indicators presented here are population per physician, population per nurse and population per hospital bed.

Table10and Graph 4

This table shows three health related indicators: Ufe expectancy at: birth. lofanl mortality rate and under S years mortality rate.

Life expectancy ax birth i. the number of years a newborn infant would live if prevailing patterns of mortality of the total population at the time of his/her birth were to atay the same throughout hi. life. Infant mortality rate is the nu.mber of deaths of infl'U1tA under one year of age per 1000live births in a. given year.

Under 5 years mortality rate is the number of deaths of children under Syears of age per 1000 live births in a given years.
