(c) S o u t h - E a s t A s i a R e g i o n
1 4 . T h e S o u t h - E a s t A s i a A d v i s o r y C o m m i t t e e on M e d i c a l R e s e a r c h (S E A / A C M R) h a s r e v i e w e d the p r o g r e s s of r e s e a r c h in the R e g i o n , w h i c h is p r o g r e s s i v e l y d e v e l o p i n g to include a l m o s t all the p r i o r i t y a r e a s i d e n t i f i e d by the C o m m i t t e e at its f i r s t s e s s i o n in 1 9 7 6 . F o l l o w i n g a r e s o l u t i o n of the R e g i o n a l C o m m i t t e e c a l l i n g for the a l l o c a t i o n of 5% of the r e g i o n a l b u d g e t for research， the a c t i v i t i e s of the p r o g r a m m e w e r e e n h a n c e d in m i d - 1 9 7 8 . T h i s e n a b l e d W H O f u r t h e r to p r o m o t e and s u p p o r t s e v e r a l r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t s in r e c o m m e n d e d p r i o r i t y a r e a s , as w e l l as t r a i n i n g in r e s e a r c h t h r o u g h s t r u c t u r e d c o u r s e s and o p p o r t u n i t i e s u n d e r the v i s i t i n g
s c i e n t i s t s / r e s e a r c h t r a i n i n g g r a n t s s c h e m e s .
1 5 . T h e m e c h a n i s m s d e v e l o p e d to i m p l e m e n t the r e s e a r c h p r o g r a m m e a l l o w for the r e q u i r e m e n t s of n a t i o n a l g o v e r n m e n t s as w e l l as those of the O r g a n i z a t i o n . C l o s e l i a i s o n h a s b e e n

1 6 . B e c a u s e the u s e f u l r e s u l t s of r e s e a r c h are not at p r e s e n t fully u t i l i z e d , W H O h a s
i n v o l v e d p r o g r a m m e a d m i n i s t r a t o r s , p o l i c y m a k e r s t o g e t h e r w i t h r e s e a r c h s c i e n t i s t s in r e s e a r c h a c t i v i t i e s in the R e g i o n . T h i s a p p r o a c h h a s r a p i d l y b u i l t up a g r e a t e r sense of a w a r e n e s s , n o t o n l y among r e s e a r c h i n s t i t u t i o n s and s c i e n t i s t s , b u t also w i t h i n m i n i s t r i e s of h e a l t h , w h i c h a r e the p r i n c i p a l u t i l i z e r s of r e s e a r c h r e s u l t s .

A t its s e c o n d s e s s i o n , in O c t o b e r 1 9 7 7 , the E u r o p e a n A d v i s o r y C o m m i t t e e f o r M e d i c a l R e s e a r c h ( E A C M R ) i d e n t i f i e d f i v e a r e a s w i t h i n the g e n e r a l c o n t e x t of h e a l t h s e r v i c e s r e s e a r c h w h i c h m e r i t e d h i g h p r i o r i t y for f u t u r e r e s e a r c h p r o m o t i o n a n d d e v e l o p m e n t e f f o r t s • T h e s e w e r e b r o a d l y r e g a r d e d as d i s t i n c t f r o m , b u t
