ABSTRACT OF REPORT ON KOREA
The Department of Public Health and Welfare was created in 1945-47, placed under the Ministry of Social Affairs in 1948, and reorganised as the Ministry of Health in 1949.

(b) Local Organization
The units are nine provinces and the City of Seoul, each with a Public Health Section in the Bureau of Social Affairs.
There are 500 public health dispensaries, giving care to the indigent.
These may develop into health centres.
2.01 The average population of a local area is about 2 million, and the average area 9,363 sq. km. The ranges are from 254,000 to 3,206,000 and from 134 to 19,000 sq. km. The total population is 20 million.
2..02 Services includes
Hospitals, far has destroyed 70$ of these and 90% of their equipment.
There are now 2 national and 90 local relief hospitals yith a total
of 1,600 beds. There are also 53 general hospitals, 488 dispensaries, and 6 provincial health centres for medical care of the indigent.

2.05 There are 3,881 full-time medical officers and 1,750 nurses. The dispensary medical officer's salary ($15 a month) is ludicrously small.
The cost of living is at least $133 a month. Voluntary organizations must therefore assist financially.
2.06 The per capita cost is 2.5 cents,

3.05 A dispensary usually has 1 full-time medical officer, 1 nurse, and 2 assistants.
3.06 Local voluntary organizations should raise $4,166 per annum in an area to support medical employees, in addition to the government grant of §1,266.
