1.ConsiderS4 as a subgroup inS5 and define a function ψon S5 by the formula

ψ(g) = 1 24

X

h∈S5, hgh−1∈S4

χU(hgh−1),

where U denotes the 2-dimensional complex irreducible representation of S4; if the sum is over an empty set, it is considered to be equal to zero. Prove thatψ is a character of some complex representation ofS5, and find multiplicities of irreducibles in that representation.

2. (a) Does there exist a finite group which has precisely four one-dimensional complex representations, precisely one five-dimensional complex irreducible representation, and no other complex irreducible representations?

(b) Using the fact that that the number of elements in the conjugacy class of g ∈ G is equal to #C#GG

g, where CGg is the centraliser of g, prove that all finite groups with three conjugacy classes are Z/3Zand S3.

(c) Prove that though1+52+132 is divisible by5and 13, there is no finite group which has just three complex irreducible representations whose dimensions are 1,5, and 13.

3.Let us consider the set representationUkofSn that arises from the action ofSn on the set of allk-element subsets of{1, 2, . . . , n}.

(a) Prove that Uk'Un−k.

(b) Compute the dimension of the space of intertwining operatorsHomSn(Uk, Ul) for all k and l.

4.In the notation of the previous question, show that the ring of intertwining operators HomSn(Uk, Uk) (where addition and multiplication is addition and composition of linear transformations respectively) is commutative.

Prove that the gamma distribution is actually a continuous probability distributions that is it is non-negative over x > 0 and its integral over R + is equal to 1.. Exercise 8

[j -invariant] Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2

But, since η preserves X, we can use the symmetry generator −η to generate a test configuration with the same central fibre X, and the Futaki invariant now is F (X, ζ, −η) = −F

First introduced by Faddeev and Kashaev [7, 9], the quantum dilogarithm G b (x) and its variants S b (x) and g b (x) play a crucial role in the study of positive representations

A sharp affine isoperimetric inequality is established which gives a sharp lower bound for the volume of the polar body.. It is shown that equality occurs in the inequality if and
