(f) Rehabilitation of Buildings: Some Economic Aspects

The Proceedings of the Second Canadian Building Congress,* (NRCC 18003), 1980.

This record contains several papers that study the market for rehabilitation, economic surveys of recycled buildings, financing and life-cycle costing of the rehabilitation of buildings.

(g) Research for Construction, N.B. Hutcheon, Special Technical Report No. 2 (NRC 14005), March 1974.

This report is presented in two parts. The first deals with the organization, the sources and the estimates of R&D expenditure in construction in Canada, and is followed by 23 recommendations. The second analyzes the nature of the construction industry and its knowledge needs.

(a) Construction Instability and Related Aspects Toward More Stable Growth in Construction (1974)

This report measures and analyzes the various sources of cyclical instability in construction in Canada and suggests measures to reduce it. It is one of the most comprehensive studies on construction instability ever undertaken in Canada. This report is based on 53 briefs and the following background studies:

Across Mountains and Muskeg: Building the Canadian Transportation System, J.T. Saywell, Discussion Paper No. 22, 1975.

(b) Construction, Technology and Productivity

In its recent publication Newfoundland from Dependency to

Self-Reliance, 1980, the ECC has shown, using specific cases, that the construction industry in Newfoundland is slower in adopting new

technology than its counterpart in Ontario. This lag, it is argued, is one of the major factors of low productivity in the construction sector in Newfoundland.
