MULLING THINGS OVER
Lent is beginning late this year. February will soon be over ± and we are still in Ordinary Time. All of that will change this Wednesday. It is Ash Wednesday. Another Lenten Season begins, and we are invited to touch the mercy of God once again.
What does that mean? Lent is our annual reminder of the unconditional love that God has for us. It is a time when the Church invites us to step aside, examine our consciences, reflect on those things that can tempt us, those realities of life which can try to separate us from the Way of God, those temptations which are all too real in our own life’s experiences. Now, this is the important thing: we do not stop there. Yes, there is evil in the world. Yes, all of us are affected by that evil. Yes, we do sin.
All of this is true! Also, true is the reality that we are children of an unconditionally loving God over whom evil has no control!
Lent Is a Season of Hope which invites us to stand tall amidst the bleakness of our world. It is a time for us to show our strength by asking forgiveness and renewing our commitment to the God who loves us. We are proud to be His sons and daughters and we are willing to admit our faults (and our failures) because they have no power over us. Yes, we have stumbled and fallen, but we don’t stay down! We get up again. Yes, we have sinned; but that does not define our lives, because Jesus has given us a way to
forgiveness, invited us back into the light and has promised not to hold the sin against us. During the coming Lenten days, we will be invited to consider the Story of Salvation and realize it is a record of God’s eternal love for us and we will be reminded that no matter how many times humanity has fallen ± it still gets up with God’s help. Our Lenten Scriptures continually show us how often God has been there right when we needed Him. To the point where He finally sent His own Son into the world.
He tried many avenues to approach us and assist us, His great moment of triumph was the arrival of the Savior Who would bind us so closely to God that we became part of the Divine Family ± and remain that today.
Our Lenten practices do indeed testify to our willingness to draw closer to God. They remind us that even though we are good, we can still be better. And they remind us that God is there for us the most when we want him there and actively strive to draw closer to that God who created us! Have you ever had an experience that so overwhelmed you that you did not want it to end? You seemed to be lifted right up and the world seemed to revolve around you, and you didn’t want it to stop? You didn’t realize you could be that happy and you actually felt the warmth of God like never before? My friends, that is what Lent is meant to be for us. It is God’s invitation to step out of the world if only a few moments a day. Lent invites us to take some time for God whether it is privately in your holy place, or publicly at some Lenten celebration. When you fast and abstain, do you do it proudly? Fasting or abstaining from meat is certainly a small request. Think of all the choices you have in what you eat and what you drink and the entertainment you provide for yourself and your family. Stepping away from it, only for a mo- ment, actually helps us appreciate what we have and how wonderful it is that God provides choices. Sharing in the sacraments and allowing yourself to be awash with the grace of God may take time, but isn’t it time well spent? Isn’t it a wonderful free- ing experience to leave prayer time and realize that for a period, you were disconnected from the world and attuned to God?
You don’t feel guilty, you feel renewed, strengthened, and full of grace.
This Wednesday, as you process before the Lord and are marked with the blessed ashes, don’t receive them as a mark of failure but as a sign of victory ± you belong to God and this cross shows it. As you feel the pressure of the ashes marking your forehead, make your promise to God that this Lent I will be doing this for you! (Not for me.) As you leave the Church or the Chapel, stand proud, take in a deep breath of fresh air, and silently shout, “Here I come world, God has sent me.” It is only the beginning of what we pray will be another special time of renewal for your heart and soul and life. Put a smile on your face because God is certainly smiling down at you!

Synod 20212022
8th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Lk 6:39 45): Jesus told His disciples, “Can a blind per- son guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher, but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teach- er.” (Lk 6:3940) Synod theme #4 ± Forming Ourselves in Synodality says “The spirituality of journeying to- gether is called to become an educational principle for the formation of the human person and of the Christian, of the families, and of the communities. How do we form people, especially those who hold roles of responsi- bility within the Christian community, to make them more capable of “journeying together”, listening to one another and engaging in dialogue?” We as Christians are called to help guide others to Christ. Let us learn to jour- ney together.
VIRTUAL BIBLE STUDY
Father Carlos will continue his virtual Bible Study on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. on FACEBOOK.
Because of COVID restrictions, you can enjoy the Bible in the comfort of your own home perhaps making it a couple or a family project. No going out into the cold!
Mission Statement
We profess our belief that Christ sent His Spirit to bestow gifts on His followers according to their part in car- rying out His mission. We are committed to be visible signs to each other, and to our community, of Christ’s Presence among us: proclaiming and evangelizing the Gospel, witnessing to God’s love according to the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching; ministering to the needs of all; and, fostering the spiritual life and growth among parishioners.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
While you are welcome to pray the Stations of Cross any time you wish, we will offer Communal Stations of the Cross on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent. These will follow the 12:10 p.m. Mass which will be celebrated in St. Francis Church on those days. The one exception will be Friday, March 4th, when the Stations will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. All are invited.
OPERATION RICE BOWL
Almsgiving is one of the pillars of Lent. This year, we are once again offering Operation Rice Bowl as an option. On Ash Wednesday, we will have “rice bowls”
available at church for you to take home. There is also a brochure which describes certain missions throughout the world. Catholic Relief Services provides emergency and ongoing aid in poorer areas of the world. If you partici- pate in Operation Rice Bowl, we ask you to designate one night a week as Mission night. On that night a simple meal is prepared (oftentimes it is a soup supper), whatever might be saved from paying for a more elaborate meal is donated to the Rice Bowl. Sometimes children, instead of eating a candy bar, will offer up the candy and contribute the price of a candy bar to the bowl.
Families can be quite creative in their plans. During Holy Week (the end of Lent), the rice bowls are returned with the contributions included inside. These donations will be distributed to the missions listed in the brochure.
However, any type of almsgiving can serve as your Lenten outreach. Thank you!
No Collection Report this week because of early transmission of the bulletin.
USHER MEETING
There will be a meeting for all of the ushers on Sunday, February 27th. We will meet at St. Francis at 8:30 am prior to the 9:00am Mass and at St. Stephen’s at 10:00 am prior to the 10:30am Mass. Please plan on attending one of these short meetings. If you are unable to attend either of these, please contact Rebecca at Rebecca.pizzirusso@dor.org for the necessary information.

SECRET PRAYER PARTNER
This is an easy one. No meetings. No money. Very little time. We all know someone in need, someone who is struggling with a problem, someone who may want support but is afraid to ask for it. Choose someone se- cretly who needs your support. Don’t tell them. This is a secret between you and God. Promise to say a little pray- er for them each day. No one will ever know of this com- mitment, you will never receive a “thank you,” but, come Easter you and God will be very happy and, perhaps, God will have answered your prayers for your partner.
Try it!
Stewardship Reflection
“A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43) Are you using your gifts in the way God intended? Have you asked God how He would like you to use them? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name.

Palabras Sabias
