HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of sci- entific research documents, whether they are pub- lished or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers.
L’archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d’enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des laboratoires publics ou privés.

A NEW HIGHER S T A T I S T I C S STUDY OF T-p + @@n AND EVIDENCE FOR SLUEBALLS *
Brookhaven National Laboratory and City College of New York collaboration' Presented by S.J. Lindenbaum
Brookhaven National Laboratory and City CoZZege o f New I'ork, Upton, NY 11973, U.S.A.
We have obtained 1203 events of the reaction T-p + $$n at 22 GeV/c over a small background (%lo%). As in our prior experiment1 the OZI suppression was essentiaLly entirely absent. A partial wave analysis allowing waves up to J = 4 and L = 3 demonstrated that a good fit was obtained with 2 waves, each well described by a Breit-Wigner resonance. The addition of another wave one at a time in turn, re- sulted in no statistical significance for the wave. Because of the complete break- down of the OZI suppression, and other characteristics of the data, these two reso- nances are strong glueball candidates. All the quantum numbers were determined and are given together with the masses and widths in Table I. There have been some slight changes within the errors in the mass and width numbers reported at the conference.
TABLE I: Glueball Candidates
Name J~~ Mass (GeV) rTot (GeV)
gT(2160) o+ 2++ 2.16 2 0.04 0.31 f 0.07 rD/rS a 0.02 gT(2320) o+ 2* 2.32 i 0.04 0.22 2 0.07 rS/rD % 0.04
Glueball candidates are discussed in the talks by J. Donoghue and E. Bloom at this conference. The $$ mass spectrum is given in Fig. 1 and the partial wave analysis fits in Fig, 2.
Fig: 1 Observed 44 mass spectrum; solid line is fit; dashed line is acceptance.
Fig. 2 Intensity (a) and phase difference (b) for the two Breit-Wigner resonance fits.
In conclusion, the glueball candidates given in Table I provide strong evidence for one or more primary glueballs in this mass region.2
