Revisions

to the

National Building Code of Canada 1977

The Associate Committee on the National Building Code announces the following revisions to the National Building Code of Canada.

Code Requirement Revision Definition

3.2.4

3.2.6.4.(3)

Add new definition as follows:

"Smoke alarm means a combined smoke detector and audible

alarm device designed to sound an alarm within the room, suite or

dwelling unit in which it is located upon the detection of products

of combustion within that room, suite or dwelling unit. "

Add new Article 3.2.4.7. as follows:

"3.2.4.7.(1) Approved smoke alarms shall be installed in each dwelling unit and, except for institutional occupancies, in each

sleeping room not within a dwelling unit.

"(2) Smoke alarms within dwelling units shall be installed

be-tween each sleeping area and the remainder of the dwelling unit, and

where the sleeping areas are served by hallways, the smoke alarms

shall be installed in the hallways.

"(3) Smoke alarms shall be installed on or near the ceiling in

conformance with approved installation instructions.

"(4) Smoke alarms shall be installed with permanent connections

to an electrical circuit and shall have no disconnect switch between the overcurrent device and the smoke alarm.

"(5) Where more than one smoke alarm is required in a dwelling unit, the smoke alarms shall be wired so that the activation of one

alarm will cause all alarms within the dwelling unit to sound.

"( 6) Where instructions are necessary to describe the maintenance and care required for smoke alarms to ensure continuing

satis-factory performance, they shall be posted in a location where they will be readily available to the occupants for reference." Delete Sentence (3) and its notes and substitute:

"(3) Except when Measure K of the ACNBC publication "Measures for Fire Safety in High Buildings" is used, each fire fighter's elevator shall

(a) be provided with a closure at each shaft opening so that the

interlock mechanism and associated wiring is operational for a period of at least I hr when the assembly is subjected to the standard fire exposure described in ULC-S 104-1976, "Standard Method for Fire Tests of Door Assemblies," (b) be protected with a vestibule containing no occupancy and

separated from the remainder of the floor area by a fire separation having a fire-resistance rating of at least % hr, or (c) be protected with a corridor containing no occupancy and

separated from the remainder of the huilding by a .fire separation having a fire-resistance rating of at least 1 hr."

Delete and substitute:

"A dH'elling unit containing more than I storey shall have an exit or

doorway into a public a('cess to exit from each of its top and

bottom floor levels, exct:pt that a single exit is permitted from any d't'elling unit provided the exit is an exterior door at or near ground

level. The uppermost floor 'level of such dwelling unit shall be not

more than 20 ft above the sill of the exterior exit door."

Add the following new Subsection 9.10.19. and renumber existing Subsection 9.10.19. as 9.10.20.

"Subsection 9.10.19. Smoke Alarms

9.10.19.1. Approved smoke alarms shall be installed in each dwel-ling unit and in each sleeping room not within a dweldwel-ling unit." "9.10.19.2. Smoke alarms within dwelling unils shall be installed

between each sleeping area and the remainder of the dwelling unil;

and where the sleeping areas are served by hallways. the smoke alarms shall be installed in the hallway."

"9.10.19.3. Smoke alarms in Articles 9.1 0.19.1. and 9.10.19.2. shall

be installed on or near the ceiling in conformance with approved

installation instructions."

"9.10.19.4. Smoke alarms shall be installed by permanent

con-nections to an electrical circuit and shall have no disconnect switch between the overcurrent device and the smoke alarm. Where the building not supplied with electrical power. smoke alarms may be

battery operated."

"9.10.19.5. Where more than one smoke alarm is required in a

dwelling unit, the smoke alarms shall be wired so that the activation

of one alarm will cause all alarms within the dwelling unit to sound."

"9.10.19.6. Where instructions are necessary to describe the mainte-nance and care required for smoke alarms to ensure continuing

satisfactory performance, they shall be posted in a location where they will be readily available to the occupants for reference."

Requirement Table 3.1. B.

Change

In fifth entry, change "Nylon carpet(J)" to read "Nylon Carpet(J),(4 I".

Add ne\\ Note (4 I to Table 3.1.B. as follows:
