It was just a decade ago that a contractor told me that computers might make a nice hobby but there was no place for them in construction.

Five years ago, another contractor told me the World Wide Web was far too complex and unreliable ever to playa role in business.

So much for predictions, Now the Web is everywhere and the amount of infonnation on it is staggering.

Some of it is of dubious use or accuracy. of course. since anyone can establish a Web site and use it to say anything, But, with care, you can find a lot of stuff on it that can help you in your business. The best place to start is with someone or some organization you know.

Thus, for many readers, your local construction ation's Web site is a good place to start. Or a trade associ-ation. Or the Canadian Construction Associassoci-ation.

Given a long-standing interest in construction science and technology, it makes sense for me to start with the Web site maintained by the Institute for Research in Con-struction (lRC) at the National Research Council. I've found that from there, I can go just about anywhere in the construction world that I want to go.

First, the IRC's home page, You'll find it at www.nrc.calirc/

Mike Culhane is head of library and Internet services at the IRC, and he says the explosion of growth in the Web is "astonishing."

"We're getting about 150,000 hits a month on our site,

and that's doubling every year," Culhane says.

That's alot of people dropping by to see what's

avail-able,

They've got plenty-from general infonnation about the IRC and each of its research programs, to thumbnail sketches of the staff, scholarly papers, and full-text publi-cations containing solid technical information of use to construction professionals.

In fact. it is the publication pages that get the greatest number of hits, Culhane says, "with the Canadian Build-ing Digests beBuild-ing the most popular,"

The CBDs were a series of 250 four-page publications

issued over the 30 years ending in 1990, While some of

them are out of date, many are still pertinent, and the price is right-they're free for the downloading.

Since 1997, the IRC has been publishing a similar

series-also in loose-leaf format-called Construction Technology Updates, Hard copies of these are sold by subscription, with each annual volume containing 12

papers, But they are coming to the Web, says jim

Gal-lagher, head of publications for the IRe.

The print versions can already be ordered on the Web site, he says, but the objective is to have them available for sale individually and downloadable from the Web site, That should happen in May, he says,

Commenting on the enduring popularity of the CBDs, Gallagher said that using the Web provided the IRC with an economical way to keep the series "in print" and, since there are no printing costs, to offer them without charge.

Another popular area of the site, Culhane says, is the section on full-text research papers.

The publications database is updated every week, he says, making it a valuable resource for anyone looking for the latest information on the many research interests at the IRe.

But what about going somewhere else in search of information? Where can you go?

For a start, try clicking on the button labelled

which contains linkstosites in Australia. Belgium,

Cana-da, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, the United States and the United King-dom, as wel1 as a couple of excellent international sites.

One of these is the International Council for Building Research Studies and Documentation (CIB), a global net-work of more than 5.000 expens representing about 500 organizations which collaborate and exchange informa-tion in more than 50 commissions that cover all fields in construction research. technology development and docu-mentation.

Equally as impressive is the site for the International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures (RILEM). This is a non-profit, non-govern-mental technical association working to spur progress in the construction sciences. techniques and industries.

Sweden's climate is much like Canada's, which means many construction problems they face have Canadian

par-al1els. That's why there has been frequent 」ッセッー・イ。エゥッョ

between researchers in the two countries.

With that in mind. try clicking on the site for the, Swedish Institute of Building Documentation-BYG-GDOK. You end up at www.byggdoc.se/.

It's a large site. since the institute is the central Swedish body providing information and documentation services on building, architecture. regional and urban planning. civil engineering. building services. environ-mental technology, air and water poIlution control and waste management. It includes searchable databases. a keyword search of the site. and abstracts of publications.

Sound good? So click and'there you are at the BYG-GDOK home page-in Swedish!

Can't read Swedish? Notto worry. Neither can I. But

in one corner of the home page are a number of national flags, including Britain's Union Jack. Clicking on that takes you to the English-language version of the database search engine. Much of the material you will find there is in English.

Of course, it's not necessary lC follow the path traced here if you know where you want to go and the URI. that gets you there. A URI. is the short form for Universal Resource Locator, a fancy name for a web address.

Thus, if you want to go directly to the English-lan-guage BYGGDOK site, you can simply point your
