Šumma ālu project Geneva (SNSF project no. 175970) T.103 (last update: June 2021)

Kaira Boddy

This provisional edition was prepared in the context of the project “Edition of the Omen Series Šumma Alu” (100011_175970) funded by the SNSF (http://p3.snf.ch/project-175970). It represents a working draft and will be regularly updated. Especially the print edition announced by Ann Guinan promises new insights and an improved understanding of the Tablet. The new versions will also be made available in the Archive ouverte of the University of Geneva. When using or citing the edition, please make sure to always refer to the latest version. Because of the closure of the British Museum due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several new joins between fragments could not yet be checked.

In due time, the final version will be published online as part of a new Šumma ālu edition, hosted on the “Electronic Babylonian Literature (eBL)” website. Therefore, many editorial conventions used by the eBL project (including the format of the museum numbers) are already followed here. Each manuscript siglum contains a reference to its provenance and date. Additional information on manuscript type is added at the end (Ex = excerpt; Par = parallel; Quo = quotation; Com = commentary).

Also note that in the reconstructed line and in the translation KIMIN/MIN (or “ditto”) is included along with the repeated word or phrase in parentheses, but in the normalized Akkadian line only the repetition in parentheses is given.

We would like to thank Sally Freedman and Ann Guinan for sharing their own material, as well as the at the time unpublished Folios with E. Leichty's and W.G. Lambert's transliterations, notes and identifications of Šumma ālu manuscripts. We also wish to thank Enrique Jiménez for allowing us to use the eBL database prior to its introduction to the public. The Folios as well as eBL helped us identify a considerable number of new fragments and joins. We are also indebted to Christopher Walker, Jonathan Taylor, Jeanette Fincke and Nicla De Zorzi for having shared material with us.

General remarks:

In addition to the editions mentioned in the manuscript catalog, transliterations and translations of certain lines from T.103 are found in A.K. Guinan, BCSMS 19 (1990) 10 (l. 1) and A.K. Guinan, CRRAI 47 (2002) 188 (ll. 5–5R, 12–12R, 33).

note: K.3677+ and Rm.924 both preserve the end of a Tablet that is labeled as Šumma ālu 102 in its colophon. However, the omens preserved are not the same, making it likely that we are dealing with two different versions. The use of LIBIR.RA in the colophon of Rm.924 suggests that this is a manuscript by Nabû-zuqup-qēnu.

note: The translation given above follows the commentary entry, which E. Jiménez, CCP 3.5.103 (2017) translates as “‘you will touch a track on the water’ – I do not know (what this means)”. However, because the commentator clearly was not sure about his interpretation, perhaps we can, instead, read kibissu māra ilappatma “his behavior will affect a son”.
