AFR/RC33/R8:

The Regional Committee,

Referring to resolution AFR/RC30/R15 adopted at its thirtieth session in 1980, and to resolution WHA36.29 of the World Health Assembly;

Considering the extremely grave health and nutritional situation prevailing in the countries of the Sahel and other countries of the region as a result of continuing and worsening drought;

Having taken note of the report on the health and nutritional repercussions of the submitted by the delegation of Mauritania,

1. COMMENDS the Regional Director for the steps that have already been taken to reduce the impact of drought and famine in the African Region;

2. AUTHORIZES the Regional Director to provide the Member States of the Sahel affected by drought adequate medical and health cooperation as the situation may require;

3. REQUESTS the regional Director to continue his efforts to give support to the countries affected by drought and famine, in accordance with resolution WHA36.29;

4. REQUESTS the Regional Director to continue to collaborate closely with the other national and international organizations giving support to the countries affected by drought.
