C . ) decay r a t e i n v a r i o u s 5 2 ~ e l a b e l l e d compounds.

Such e x p e r i m e n t s u s e t h e p r o p o r t i o n a l i t y o f t h i s decay-mode c o n s t a n t X t o t h e e l e c t r o n d e n s i t y a t t h e n u c l e u s p . By comparing two c h e m i c a l l y d i f f e r e n t com- pounds, t h e r e l a t i v e v a r i a t i o n o f t h e

I n i o d i n e compounds e l e c t r o n d e n s i t i e s a t t h e n u c l e u s f o r v a r i o u s e l e c t r o n i c con- f i g u r a t i o n s have been w e l l e s t a b l i s h e d u s i n g D i r a c - S l a t e r c a l c u l a t i o n s /3/.

However, d i f f e r e n t A<r 2 > - v a l u e s a r e found i n t h e l i t e r a t u r e (A<r >129 2 =

1 8 . 5 / 5 / and 2 1 / 6 / . 1 0 - ~ fm 2 and i t seemed i n t e r e s t i n g t o make an e x p e r i m e n t a l e s t i - m a t i o n of t h i s p a r a m e t e r .

2 . E x p e r i m e n t a l . - D i r e c t measurements o f A X f o r s e v e r a l p a i r s o f i o d i n e compounds l a b e l l e d w i t h 1 2 3 ~ have been performed u s i n g d i f f e r e n t i a l i o n i z a t i o n c h a m b e r s / l /

The i n i t i a l a c t i v i t i e s i n t r o d u c e d i n t o t h e two chambers have been a d j u s t e d t o t h e same v a l u e ( 1 0

m C i ) by w e i g h ~ i n g s t o e c h i o m e t r i c e q u i v a l e n t q u a n t i t i e s o f t h e two compounds. For e a c h p a i r o f s o u r c e s two measurements a r e made by i n t e r c h a n g i n g t h e s o u r c e s from one cham- b e r t o t h e o t h e r , s o t h a t t h e i r a r i t h m e t i c mean c a n c e l s t h e z e r o e f f e c t o f t h e appa- r a t u s .

The 1 2 3 ~ a c t i v i t y i s produced by t h e n u c l e a r p r o c e s s e s

a t a p r o t o n e n e r g y o f 65 MeV. The r a d i o - n u c l i d i c p u r i t y i s v e r y h i g h ; o n l y

1 2 5 I ( T l I 2 = 60 d ) i s d e t e c t a b l e w i t h a maximum o f 0.2 % and i t d o e s n o t p e r t u r b o u r measurements owing t o i t s l o n g h a l f - l i f e .

I n t h i s work, two l i f e - t i m e v a r i a t i o n measurements have been made by comparing, a t room t e m p e r a t u r e , KI04 and Na3H2106 t o KI03. The isomer s h i f t s o f t h e 1 2 9 ~ , c o r - r e s p o n d i n g compounds a r e t a k e n from t h e l i t e r a t u r e :
