The automobile is the most popular means of transport in the United States. Buses for long trips since bus fares are less costly than railroads or airlines. May of the large, modern buses provide restrooms on aboard. The airplane is another popular means of long distance travel, carrying more than 293 million passengers a year. The 98 scheduled airlines provide service at 15,831 civil airports. Twenty regional control centers direct air traffic between cities.
