Text: Cholera
Cholera is an infectious disease that cause severe watery diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and even to death if untreated. It was prevalent in the United States before modern water and sewage treatment system eliminated to spread by contaminated water.
However, cholera outbreaks are still a serious problem in other parts of the world. The World Health Organization reports that’s that there are 1,3 million cases each year.
The disease is most common in places with poor sanitation, crowding, war and famine. Common locations include parts of Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
Vibrio cholera, the bacterium that cause cholera is usually found in food or water contamination by feces from a person with the infection. Common sources include:
Foods and drinks sold by street vendors, vegetable grown with water containing human wastes, raw or undercooked fish and seafood caught in water polluted with sewage. When a person consumes the contaminated food or water, the bacteria releases a toxin in the intestines that produce severe diarrhea. About one in 20 people infected have severe watery diarrhea accompanied by vomiting, which can quickly lead to dehydration. These include: rapid heart rate, loss of skin elasticity, dry mucous membranes including the inside of the mouth, throat, nose and eyelids, low blood pressure, thirst muscle cramps if not treated dehydration can lead to shock and death in a matter of hours.
The Common methods for treating cholera include oral rehydration salts, intravenous fluid rehydration, antibiotics, zinc supplements. These treatments add to the liquid in the body and rehydrate it. They also help reduce the length of time you have

diarrhea. If you are traveling to an area where cholera is common, your chances of catering the disease are still low if you wash your hands, drink only bottled or boiled water, avoid raw food and shellfish, avoid dairy foods, and eat row fruit and vegetables that you can peel yourself.
