Recogniing
that
is a chronic health problem that could cause considerable h u m suffering and that it is attended by severe complications, such as blindness, renal Mure, and wdiovascdar disease:Concerned at the significant burden
on
the public health services d t i n g h m thedisease,
and the increasing economic costs it provokesin
Member States;Being aware of the need to intensify e f f w to p e n t and control diabetes;

INVITES
Member States to:1.1 assess the magnitude of diabetes at the natiod level;
1.2 initiate national diabetes control programmes for primary prevention of diabetes
and secodaty prevention of its complications as an integral part of primary health care and in coordination with the h d t h programmes concerned;
1 -3 provide the essential elements a d acceptable standads of health cate for people with diabetes at all levels of the health care system, especially at primary health
care centres;
1.4 improve the knowledge of md promote experience in diabetes control, including providing opportunities for training of health manpower
in
the clinical and public health aspects of diabetes;1.5 involve nongovefnmental orgaakations and national diabetes associations in national diabetes control progmmmes;
2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to promote the development of educational materid appropriate to populations in the Region, and assist counties in sknghening national capabilities
in
