S e v e r a l e x a m p l e s o f t h e u s e o f l a s e r s p e c - t r o s c o p i c t e c h n i q u e s i n t h e n u c l e a r i n d u s t r y a r e p r e s e n t e d w i t h o u r m o s t r e c e n t r e s u l t s .
A t o m i c f l u o r e s c e n c e o f p l u t o n i u m i n t h e I C P h a s b e e n d e v e l o p e d f o r t r a c e d e t e r m i n a t i o n i n s p e c t r o s c o p i c a l l y c o m p l e x m a t r i c e s . The h i g h s e l e c t i v i t y o f f e r e d b y l a s e r s p e c t r o s c o p y l e a d s t o a d e t e c t i o n l i m i t o f 1 - 1 0 y g / L i n t h e p r e s e n c e o f s e v e r a l g / L o f u r a n i u m . T h i s i s a 1 0 0 0 f o l d i m p r o v e m e n t o v e r c o n v e n t i o n a l I C P e m i s s i o n s p e c t r o s c o p y , w h i c h s u f f e r s f r o m s p e c t r a l i n t e r f e r e n c e s c a u s e d by u r a n i u m a n d t h e l a n t h a n i d e s .
O n - l i n e c o n t r o l o f n u c l e a r w a s t e g l a s s e s i s accom- p l i s h e d b y 1 a s e r - i n d u c e d t i m e - r e s o l v e d e m i s s i o n s p e c t r o m e t r y . An e x c i m e r l a s e r i s u s e d t o c r e a t e a p l a s m a on t h e s u r f a c e o f t h e f l o w i n g g l a s s a n d t h e e m i s s i o n o f 1 0 m a i n e l e m e n t s i s m o n i t o r e d s i m u l t a n e o u s l y b y a p u l s e d i m a g e i n t e n s i f i e r / p h o t o d i o d e a r r a y . I n t e s t s p e r f o r m e d i n a n i n d u s t r i a l p i l o t p l a n t , a l l e l e m e n t s w i t h c o n c e n t r a t i o n s a b o v e 0 . 1 % a r e e a s i l y d e t e r m i n e d w i t h a r e l a t i v e p r e c i s i o n b e t t e r o r l e s s t h a n 5 %.
The u s e o f r e s o n a n c e i o n i z a t i o n mass s p e c t r o s c o p y ( R I M S ) w i t h a h o l l o w c a t h o d e s o u r c e i s d i s c u s s e d . T h i s t e c h n i q u e i s b e i n g d e v e l o p e d t o s i m p 1 i f y i s o t o p i c m e a s u r e m e n t s o f c o m p l e x m i x t u r e s o f e l e m e n t s a n d t o p e r m i t t h e m e a s u r e m e n t o f i s o t o p e s p r e s e n t a t v e r y l o w c o n c e n t r a t i o n s . S e v e r a l RIMS s p e c t r a a r e p r e s e n t e d a n d t h e u s e o f D o p p l e r f r e e s p e c t r o s c o p y a s s o c i a t e d w i t h mass s p e c t r o s c o p y i s d i s c u s s e d .
T h e r m a l l e n s i n g s p e c t r o s c o p y h a s b e e n a d a p t e d t o a g l o v e - b o x i n s t a l l a t i o n a n d i s u s e d t o a c q u i r e d a t a on t h e v a l e n c e s t a t e s o f t r a n s u r a n i c e l e m e n t s a t t r a c e l e v e l s i n H20 f o r s t u d i e s o f 1 o n g t e r m w a s t e s t o r a g e .
