PREFACE

The c o n s t r u c t i v e s t u d y of f a i l u r e s i s a n e s s e n t i a l p a r t of r e s e a r c h work. Such i n v e s t i g a t i o n s a r e of s p e c i a l v a l u e i n t h e f i e l d of s o i l mechanics s i n c e t h e r e i s s t i l l s o much -to be done i n t h e c o r r e l a t i o n of l a b o r a t o r y t e s t s of s o i l samples and t h e performance of s o i l s i n s i t u .

T h i s r e p o r t i s a p r o g r e s s s t a t e m e n t of s u c h a s t u d y t o which t h e w r i t e r had l o n g looked f o r w a r d . He was con- s u l t e d a b o u t t h i s f a i l u r e b y M r . F. E. Lathe e v e n b e f o r e t h e D i v i s i o n of B u i l d i n g Research was formed and had k e p t i n mind t h e v a l u e t o be d e r i v e d from a s t u d y of t h e u n u s u a l s l i d e s a t t h e B e a t t i e Mine. f i l l i n g t h e open p i t and underground w o r k i n g s a t t h e mine. A t t e m p t s were made t o r e h a b i l i t a t e t h e mine, b u t t h e s e were f r u s t r a t e d by o t h e r l a r g e e a r t h f l o w s i n 1945 and 1946. m e s e n o t e s o u t l i n e t h e sequence of e v e n t s l e a d i n g u p t o t h e e a r t h f l o w s , d e s c r i b e t h e e a r t h f l o w s , a n d g i v e t h e r e s u l t s o f a two-day f i e l d s t u d y u n d e r t a k e n i n May 1960.

H i s t o r y of t h e Mine

The B e a t t i e Mine began p r o d u c t i o n i n 1933, t h e g o l d - b e a r i n g o r e b e i n g won from a l a r g e r e l a t i v e l y low-grade o r e body. The o r e body l a y a l o n g t h e n o r t h flanlc of

a

r o c k r i d g e o r i e n t e d i n a n e a s t - w e s t d i r e c t i o n . A t t h e w e s t e n d , t h e o r e body came t o s u r f a c e a n d plunged u n d e r o v e r b u r d e n t o w a r d s t h e e a s t . Ore w a s mined by

a

c o m b i n a t i o n of " g l o r y h o l e " and underground s t o p i n g methods. T u t t l e ( 1 9 3 9 ) g i v e s a d e t a i l e d d e s c r i p t i o n of t h e workings. The " g l o r y h o l e " was a n open p i t w i t h v e r y s t e e p s i d e s a n d s l o p i n g ends. The h a n g i n g w a l l

of

p i t was s u p p o r t e d by t h e f o o t w a l l by means of f o u r p i l l a r s l e f t a c r o s s t h e p i t a t f r e q u e n t i n t e r v a l s . The ends of t h e p i t s l o p e d a t a b o u t 40 d e g r e e s . Ore was mined from t h e e n d s of t h e p i t a n d r o l l e d down t h e s l o p e s i n t o t h e underground system. By 1943, t h e " g l o r y h o l e " w a s a b o u t

a t

t h e e a s t end a n d o v e r 200 f t pride a t t h e w e s t end. The d e e p e s t p o i n t of t h e p i t w a s a b o u t 300 f t below t h e s u r f a c e .

The p r o d u c t i o n a t t h e mine w a s s c h e d u l e d s o t h a t t h e g l o r y h o l e o r p i t w a s worked d u r i n g t h e summer months; t h e

more e x p e n s i v e underground development and mining were c o n d u c t e d d u r i n g t h e w i n t e r .

A s p r o d u c t i o n proceeded, t h e p i t w a s g r a d u a l l y

l e n g t h e n e d , r e q u i r i n g t h e s t r i p p i n g of g r e a t e r a n d g r e a t e r d e p t h s of overburden from t h e e a s t end a n d n o r t h s i d e of t h e p i t . I n

i t s

e a r l y s t a g e s , t h e s t r i p p i n g was a c c o m p l i s h e d by h o r s e a n d s c r a p p e r s . A s t h e amounts of s t r i p p i n g grew l a r g e r a tower d r a g l i n e system and mechanical equipment were used.

I n a l l c a s e s , t h e s t r i p p e d m a t e r i a l w a s d e p o s i t e d n e a r t h e t o p of s l o p e s c u t i n t h e o v e r b u r d e n . The s l o g e s were c u t t o a s l o p e of

w i t h a berm b o r d e r i n g t h e o r e body. The maximum d e p t h of overburden was a b o u t 1 0 0 f t , c o n s i s t i n g of

f t of c l a y u n d e r l a i n by 1 5 f t of sand. F i g u r e 1 i s a photograph showing t h e s l o p e s i n 1943. The o v e r b u r d e n con- s i s t e d of v a r v e d c l a y o v e r l y i n g a few f e e t of sand o v e r t h e bedrock. The varved c l a y was d e p o s i t e d i n l a t e g l a c i a l t i m e s i n Lake Barlow-Ojibway ( A n t e v s 1 9 2 5 ) and was f o u n d t o be n e a r l y n o r m a l l y c o n s o l i d a t e d . The mine was l o c a t e d a b o u t one m i l e n o r t h of Lake Duparquet and t h e r i m of t h e p i t on t h e w e s t end was a b o u t 60 f t below t h e l a k e l e v e l . S e i s m i c s u r v e y s showed t h e r e was no l e d g e of b e d r o c k between t h e r i m of t h e p i t and t h e s h o r e s of t h e l a k e . The t a i l i n g s d i s p o s a l s i t e was l o c a t e d

i n

swampy l a n d n e a r t h e s o u t h w e s t c o r n e r of t h e p i t . I t was n o t e d t h a t c o n s i d e r a b l e seepage i s s u e d from t h e sand u n d e r l y i n g t h e c l a y , p a r t i c u l a r l y a t t h e w e s t end of t h e p i t , c l o s e s t t o t h e l a k e s h o r e , and t h e t a i l i n g s d i s p o s a l a r e a .

By t h e n a t u r e of t h e s t r i p p i n g o p e r a t i o n s , a s l o p e f a i l u r e c o u l d be e x p e c t e d . The magnitude of t h e e v e n t u a l f a i l u r e , however, i s somewhat s u r p r i s i n g i n view of t h e v a r v e d c l a y s b e i n g f r e s h w a t e r d e p o s i t s . ! h e f i r s t s l i d e r e c o r d e d i n t h e a v a i l a b l e r e c o r d s w a s on 19 J u n e 1937. I t o c c u r r e d a t t h e n o r t h e a s t c o r n e r of t h e g l o r y h o l e , had t h e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c shape of a n e a r t h f l o w , a n d i n v o l v e d

a

few t h o u s a n d y a r d s o f m a t e r i a l .

The second s l i d e r e c o r d e d , i n 1942, was a b o u t midway a l o n g t h e n o r t h s i d e o f t h e g l o r y h o l e . Again, t h i s s l i d e d i d n o t s e r i o u s l y a f f e c t o p e r a t i o n s i n t h e mine. I n J u n e , 1943, a tremendous e a r t h f l o w o c c u r r e d which i n v o l v e d a m i l l i o n c u b i c y a r d s o f c l a y . This s l i d e c o m p l e t e l y f i l l e d t h e g l o r y h o l e a n d p e n e t r a t e d t h e underground w o r k i n g s . Some c l a y r a n n e a r l y h a l f a m i l e a l o n g t h e s i x t h l e v e l d r i f t t o w a r d s t h e Donchester Mine which

was

c o n n e c t e d t o t h e B e a t t i e Mine underground. !The main p i l l a r s u p p o r t i n g t h e h a n g i n g

w a l l o f t h e p i t c o l l a p s e d , a l l o w i n g t h e h a n g i n g w a l l

a t

t h e e a s t end of t h e p i t t o f a l l i n t o t h e p i t . According t o i n f o r m a t i o n r e c e i v e d from M r . P.E. P a t t o n i n c o r r e s p o n d e n c e , t h e main p i l l a r c o l l a p s e d d u r i n g t h e n i g h t of 15-16 J u n e , 1943, p r i o r t o t h e s o i l movement. The e x t e n t of t h i s l a n d s l i d e i s shown i n F i g u r e 2 , a l o n g w i t h t h e s m a l l e r f a i l u r e s r e c o r d e d i n 1937 and 1942. F i g u r e 3 i s a photograph t a k e n from t h e w e s t end of t h e g l o r y h o l e on 1 6 J u n e , 1943, showing p a r t of

While t h e n e i g h b o u r i n g D o n c h e s t e r mine remained i n o p e r a t i o n , s t e p s were t a k e n

t o

r e h a b i l i t a t e t h e B e a t t i e Mine, I n t h e underground w o r k i n g s , t h e c l a y was s l u i c e d by h i g h p r e s s u r e w a t e r j e t s and t h e r e s u l t i n g s l u r r y was pumped t o t h e s u r f a c e . Small hydr.?ulic d r e d g e s were s e t u p i n t h e g l o r y h o l e a n d i n t h e s l i d e c r a t e r t o remove t h e c l a y from t h e

p i t a r e a . By June 1946, a b o u t 1& m i l l i o n c u b i c y a r d s of c l a y h a d been removed from t h e p i t a r e a a n d t h e underground

w o r k i n g s . I t was e s t i m a t e d t h a t a f u r t h e r one m i l l i o n c u b i c y a r d s h a d

t o

be removed b e f o r e a n y p r o d u c t i o n c o u l d s t a r t i n t h e mine.

I n 1 9 4 5 , a few s m a l l s l i d e s o c c u r r e d i n t h e c r a t e r , undoing some o f t h e work o f t h e d r e d g e s . !I!he s l i d e s c o n t i n u e d i n 1946, t h e l a r g e s t one o c c u r r i n g on 25 J u n e , i n v o l v i n g a b o u t 250,000 c u b i c y a r d s . It was found t h a t t h e walls of t h e c r a t e r were formed of v a n e d c l a y . A r e t r o g r e s s i v e t y p e o f f a i l u r e w a s i n d i c a t e d by t h e slump b l o c k s which c o u l d be o b s e r v e d a r o u n d t h e c r a t e r . During t h e sampling work, l a y e r s o f sand o r s i l t were e n c o u n t e r e d i n t h e v a n e d c l a y . With t h e hand equipment, it was n o t p o s s i b l e

t o

p e n e t r a t e t h e sandy l a y e r s , s o t h a t t h e p r o f i l e of samples o b t a i n e d were t a k e n i n t h r e e b o r i n g s s p a c e d dovm t h e f a c e of t h e c r a t e r . From t h e t h r e e b o r i n g s , a p r o f i l e o f s a m p l e s r e p r e s e n t i n g 30 f t of v a r v e d c l a y

was

o b t a i n e d . The s a m p l e r

u s e d w a s t h e N G I p i s t o n s a m p l e r (Bjerrum 1 9 5 4 ) .

It;

i s b e l i e v e d t h a t t h e bottom of t h e f a i l u r e s u r f a c e w a s 10 o r 1 5 f t below t h e bottom sample, s o t h a t t h e r e s u l t s o b t a i n e d c a n n o t be a p p l i e d t o a s t a b i l i t y a n a l y s i s . It i s hoped, however, t h a t a g e n e r a l i m p r e s s i o n of g e o t e c h n i c a l p r o p e r t i e s of t h e v a r v e d c l a y of t h e s i t e may be g a i n e d . E l e v a t i o n s of t h e b o r i n g s were t a k e n i n r e l a t i o n t o t h e c o l l a r of development s h a f t l o c a t e d

a t

t h e w e s t end of t h e g l o r y h o l e . From t h e mine r e c o r d s ,

it

i s i n f e r r e d t h a t t h e e l e v a t i o n of t h e c l a y p l a i n w a s a b o u t 930. Thus t h e l e v e l of t h e w a t e r i n t h e c r a t e r i n May 1960 w a s a b o u t e l e v a t i o n 900. No p r e c i s e bench mark c o u l d be found i n t h e mine r e c o r d s t o s e r v e a s a datum f o r t h e f i e l d i n v e s t i g a t i o n .

L a b o r a t o r y Work

The n i n e t u b e samples were t e s t e d t o determine t h e u n d r a i n e d s t r e n g t h , t h e p r e c o n s o l i d a t i o n p r e s s u r e , a n d

c l a s s i f i c a t i o n p r o p e r t i e s . Whenever

i t

w a s p o s s i b l e , c l a s s i f i c a t i o n a n d s e n s i t i v i t y t e s t s were performed on

s e p a r a t e d samples of dark and l i g h t l a y e r s of t h e v a r v e d c l a y , !&e r e s u l t s of t e s t s a r e p r e s e n t e d i n F i g u r e 6; l i n e A-A i s t h e e f f e c t i v e overburden p r e s s u r e , t a k i n g t h e s u r f a c e of t h e c l a y t o be a b o u t e l e v a t i o n 930 w i t h t h e w a t e r t a b l e c l o s e t o t h e s u r f a c e . The r e s u l t s of t h e c o n s o l i d a t i o n t e s t s i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e c l a y i s s l i g h t l y o v e r c o n s o l i d a t e d a n d i n d i c a t e s t h a t a d r y i n g c r u s t h a s developed

a t

t h e s u r f a c e . The u n d r a i n e d s t r e n g t h d e t e r m i n a t i o n s made i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e u n d r a i n e d s h e a r s t r e n g t h was a b o u t 500 p s f , i n c r e a s i n g s l i g h t l y w i t h d e p t h . C l a s s i f i c a t i o n t e s t r e s u l t s a r e p r e s e n t e d i n t h e form of s o l i d l i n e s f o r t e s t s conducted on mixed l i g h t and dark l a y e r s of t h e c l a y and by broken l i n e s f o r t h e s e t e s t s conducted on samples made u p of s e p a r a t e d d a r k a n d l i g h t l a y e r s . It w i l l be n o t e d t h a t d i f f e r e n c e i n p r o p e r t i e s between t h e d a r k a n d l i g h t l a y e r s w a s g r e a t .

S e n s i t i v i t y w a s determined f o r t h e mixed samples by means of a l a b o r a t o r y vane a p p a r a t u s and a r e p l o t t e d on F i g u r e 6. An a t t e m p t w a s made t o d e t e r m i n e t h e s e n s i t i v i t y of t h e i n d i v i d u a l l a y e r s o f dark a n d l i g h t m a t e r i a l by means of

a

f a l l cone d e v i c e . These r e s u l t s a r e t a b l e d i n F i g u r e 6 a n d i n d i c a t e t h a t the l i g h t l a y e r s were g e n e r a l l y more s e n s i t i v e t h a n t h e d a r k l a y e r s , !be o v e r - a l l s e n s i t i v i t y a p p e a r s t o be above 1 5 which i s u n u s u a l f o r f r e s h w a t e r c l a y s i n view of t h e f i n d i n g s of Skempton a n d Northey ( 1 9 5 2 ) a n d B jerrum a n d

Undrained s t r e n g t h d e t e r m i n a t i o n s were made by t h r e e

methods:

t h e l a b o r a t o r y vane, t h e unconfined compression

t e s t and t h e u n c o n s o l i d a t e d , undrained t r i a x i a l t e s t

w i t h

l a t e r a l p r e s s u r e approximately e q u a l t o t h e e f f e c t i v e over-

burden s t r e s s . !he r e s n l t s of t h e t h r e e t e s t methods a r e

p r e s e n t e d and i n g e n e r a l a p p e a r t o have g i v e n comparable

r e s u l t s .

If

t h e l a b o r a t o r y vane t e s t s a p p e a r t o be s l i g h t l y

lower,

i t

is

because t h e vane d e t e r m i n a t i o n s were made on

t h e

f i r s t

specimen e x t r a c t e d from each t u b e and hence t h e

t e s t s were conducted on specimens which may have s u f f e r e d

more d i s t u r b a n c e t h a n t h e remaining samples.

I n t h e unconfined compression t e s t s on specimens

w i t h t h e v a r v i n g n e a r l y h o r i z o n t a l , f a i l u r e occurred by

s p r e a d i n g

i n

t h e l i g h t l a y e r s and v e r t i c a l c r a c k s i n t h e

more b r i t t l e dark l a y e r s ,

s i m i l a r

t o t h a t r e p o r t e d f o r t h e

S t e e p Rock c l a y s (Eden 1 9 5 5 ) .

Conclusions
