The m e t a s t a b l e c i s i s o m e r [ l i f e t i m e i n t h e r a n g e o f m i n u t e s i n v a r i o u s s o l v e n t s a t room t e m p e r a t u r e ) i s n o t w e l l c h a r a c t e r i z e d : n o v i b r a t i o - n a l l y r e s o l v e d s p e c t r a e x i s t , no e m i s s i o n has been d e t e c t e d , and t h e e x c i t e d s t a t e p o t e n t i a l i s h y p o t h e t i c a l .We have s t a r t e d an e x t e n s i v e i n v e s t i g a t i o n of t h i o i n d i g o : f o r t h e s t a b l e t r a n s i s o m e r t h e a b s o r p t i o n and f l u o r e s c e n c e s p e c t r a a r e v e r y r e g u l a r , t h e v i b r a t i o n a l f r e q u e n c i e s change o n l y l i t t l e upon e l e c t r o n i c e x c i t a t i o n and r e m a i n harmonic up t o s e v e r a l q u a n t a i n b o t h t h e ground and e x c i t e d e l e c t r o n i c s t a t e , i n d i c a t i n g t h a t t h e changes i n t h e p o t e n t i a l a r e s m a l l .
The p r e s e n t work i s c o n c e r n e d w i t h t h e c i s i s o m e r : s t a b i l i z e d by m a t r i x i s o l a t i o n , v i b r a t i o n a l s p e c t r a i n t h e ground and e x c i t e d s t a t e have been o b t a i n e d . Emission was d e t e c t e d and e s t i m a t e s of t h e e m i s s i o n quantum y i e l d c o u l d b e made.

I1 - EXPERIMENTAL Sample p r e p a r a t i o n :-
F o r t h e a b s o r p t i o n s p e c t r a : a s o l u t i o n o f t h i o i n d i g o i n n-nonane i s i r r a d i a t e d d u r i n g 1 m i n u t e w i t h a 150 W i o d i n e lamp, u s i n g a f i l t e r t o e l i m i n a t e A >.500 nm, and t h e n q u i c k l y p l u n g e d i n t o l i q u i d n i t r o g e n .-
F o r t h e e m i s s i o n s p e c t r a : t h e sample o f t h i o i n d i g o i n l i q u i d 2 , 5 - d i p h e n y l o x a z o l e ( ; M.P. : 7Z°C) i s i r r a d i a t e d and r a p i d l y c o o l e d by s p u t t e r i n g on a g l a s s p l a t e . I n b o t h s o l u t i o n s i t was v e r i f i e d t h a t t h e p h o t o i n d u c e d s p e c i e s , a s c r i b e d t o t h e c i s i s o m e r , r e v e r t s i n t h e d a r k t o t r a n s - t h i o i n d i g o . The i r r a d i a t e d samples s t i l l c o n t a i n a l a r g e amount o f t r a n s - t h i o i n d i g o .I11 - ABSORPTION SPECTRA
F i g . 1 shows a b s o r p t i o n s p e c t r a o f t r a n s a n d c i s - t h i o i n d i g o i n n-nonane. The non- i r r a d i a t e d sample c o n t a i n s t r a n s - t h i o i n d i g o o n l y . The amount o f t h e c i s i s o m e r i n t h e i r r a d i a t e d sample i s e s t i m a t e d t o be a t l e a s t 15% o f t h e t o t a l amount o f t h i o i n d i g o .

The o b s e r v e d l i n e w i d t h c o u l d be due t o a s t r o n g e l e c t r o n - p h o n o n c o u p l i n g and/or t o a v e r y r a p i d decay ( 2 0 f s l o f t h e e x c i t e d s t a t e[see b e l o w ) .

I n a d d i t i o n t o t h e b r o a d e m i s s i o n background, s h a r p l i n e s a r e o b s e r v e d , most o f w h i c h c o r r e s p o n d t o Raman l i n e s o f t h e m a t r i x ; some Raman l i n e s o f b o t h t h i o i n d i g o i s o m e r s c o u l d a l s o b e i d e n t i f i e d .

T h i s d e t e r m i n a t i o n y i e l d e d % F B o t h e v a l u a t i o n s o f t h i s q u a n t i t y s u f f e r f r o m t h e f a c t t h a t t h e m e a s u r e m e n t s a r e m a d e on s t r o n g l y s c a t t e r i n g p o l y c r y s t a l l i n e m a t e r i a l and t h a t d i f f e r e n t a m o u n t s o f e a c h i s o m e r may n o t b e m a t r i x i s o l a t e d b u t a r e r e j e c t e d f r o m t h e m a t r i x i n t h e p r e p a r a - t i o n p r o c e s s . DISCUSSION The q u a n t i t a t i v e e v a l u a t i o n o f v e r y weak e m i s s i o n i s s u b j e c t t o g r e a t u n c e r t a i n t i e s ; i n t h e p r e s e n t s t u d y i t becomes e v e n more d i f f i c u l t d u e t o t h e s t r o n g f l u o r e s c e n c e o f t h e a l w a y s p r e s e n t t r a n s i s o m e r . Our r e s u l t s do n e v e r t h e l e s s c l e a r l y i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e e m i s s i o n quantum y i e l d o f c i s - t h i o i n d i g o i s v e r y low, l y i n g i n t h e r a n g e o f t o T h e l i f e t i m e o f t h e f i r s t e x c i t e d s t a t e t h e r e f o r e i s v e r y s h o r t (6 200 f s l . a s t h e r a d i a t i v e l i f e t i m e c a n b e e s t i m a t e d t o b e s i m i l a r f a r t h e two i s o m e r s and i s 1known t o b e - = 2 0 n s /5/ f o r t r a n s - t h i o i n d i g o . S u c h a s h o r t l i f e t i m e would make a kr
t o r s i o n a l mode. We s u g g e s t t h a t t h i s r a p i d decay i s i n d i c a t i v e o f an u n s t a b l e n u c l e a r c o n f i g u r a t i o n o f t h e e x c i t e d s t a t e o f t h e c i s i s o m e r a l o n g t h i s c o o r d i n a t e .
