Abstract. - The phase e q u i l i b r i u m o f l i q u i d and s o l i d 3 ~ e w i l l be discussed when t h e s p i n r e l a - x a t i o n t i m e i s l o n g compared t o t h e experimental t i m e scale. The concept o f an e f f e c t i v e magnetic f i e l d and t h e n a t u r e o f t h e phase diagram w i l l be c l a r i f i e d . Special emphasis w i l l be given t o i r r e v e r s i b l e aspects o f t h e problem : s p i n d i f f u s i o n near t h e moving i n t e r f a c e , entropy production d u r i n g m e l t i n g and subsequent ~ p i n ~ r e l a x a t i o n . Possible experiments w i l l be described, and t h e i r impact on microscopic t h e o r i e s o f He w i l l be discussed.
