A b s t r a c t . - Measurements o f F a r a d a y R o t a t i o n (FR) i n a n o r p h o u s As2Se3 a s a f u n c t i o n of p h o t o n e n e r g y a r e r e p o r t e d . I n t h e b u l k m a t e r i a l t h e t e m p e r a t u r e d e p e n d e n c e o f t h e FR a n d t h e d e r i v e d e n e r g y g a p EER i s i n v e s t i g a t e d i n t h e r a n g e 3-300 K . F o r EER a t e m p e r a t u r e z o e f f i c i e n t o f 2.4 x eV/K i s f o u n d . I n amgrphous f i l m s t h e FR c o u l d b e measured t h r o u g h t h e e n e r q y r a n g e w h e r e t h e s i g n o f t h e FP.-angle i s r e v e r s e d . The p h o t o n e n e r g y c o r r e s - p o n d i n g t o z e r o FR i s i n a g r e e m e n t w i t h t h e g a p v a l u e c a l c u l a t e d f r o m t h e m e a s u r e m e n t s i n b u l k m a t e r i a l , t a k i n g i n t o a c c o u n t t h e e x p e c t e d d i f f e r e n c e s . between b u l k and f i l m .

A s a-As2Se3 i s a g l a s s , which r e s e m b l e s a-As2S3 i n many p r o p e r - t i e s , we i n v e s t i g a t e d i f t h i s s u g g e s t i o n i s s u s t a i n e d b y s i m i l a r mea- s u r e m e n t s on t h i s n a t e r i a l . A l s o t h e t e m p e r a t u r e d e p e n d e n c e o f FR i s i n v e s t i g a t e d a s it c a n r e v e a l some a s p e c t s of t h e n a t u r e o f t h e gaF.

W e a l s o r e p o r t FR-measurements t h r o u g h t h e a b s o r p t i o n e d g e i n t h i n a-As2Se3 f i l m s i n o r d e r t o o b t a i n a d i r e c t d e t e m i n a t i o n on t h e e n e r g y g a p . The e x p e r i m e n t a l method was e s s e n t i a l l y t h e s a n e a s h a s been d e s c r i b e d i n r e f . 1.

E x p e r i m e n t s on b u l k m a t e r i a l . - a-As2Se3 was p r e p a r e d by a u e n c h i n g from t h e m e l t . A f t e r c u t t i n g and p o l i s h i n g , t h e s a m p l e t h i c k n e s s was 0 . 3 3 mm. Measurements w e r e p e r f o r m e d i n a m a g n e t i c f i e l d o f 3 . 5 7 T a n d f i t t e d t o t h e KLN- f o r m u l a f o r d i r e c t t r a n s i t i o n s i n c r y s t a l l i n e m a t e r i a l ( 2 ) a n d t o t h e MS- f o r m u l a f o r amorphous s e m i c o n d u c t o r s ( 3 ) . The r e s u l t s are shown i n f i g u r e 1. The v a l u e s EFR a r e s i g n i f i c a n t l y C;

The r e s u l t i n g b e h a v i o u r of t h e FR i s shown i n f i g u r e 2. A s i g n r e v e r s a l a t 471 nm c o r r e s p o n d s t o a n e n e r g y o f 2.63 eV.
