A STUDY O F EXPOSED REII\IFORCED CONCRETE FACINGS
The Chambre Syndicale d e s C o n s t r u c t e u r s en Ciment Arm6 ( t h e Reinforced Concrete Buil-ders' ~ s s o c i a t i o n ) w a s i n s t r u c t e d t o draw up, i n l i n e with t h e programme of t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l B u i l d i n g Committee, a study on exposed r e i n f o r c e d c o n c r e t e f a c i n g s .
To t h i s end t h e widest p o s s i b l e c o n s u l t a t i o n w a s undertaken among b u i l d e r s h a v i n g a c q u i r e d e x p e r i e n c e t h a t could be c o n s i d e r e d a u t h o r i t a t i v e i n t h e f i e l d , and numerous t e s t s were made.
The e x t e n s i v e documentation t h u s accumulated has made i t p o s s i b l e t o d r a f t t h e p r e s e n t r e p o r t which d e a l s s u c c e s s i v e l y with g e n e r a l i t i e s as t o m a t e r i a l s
t o be used and t h e i r p l a c i n g , then with t h e v a r i o u s t y p e s of f a c i n g s most c u r r e n t l y used i n France,

1. General C o n s i d e r a t i o n s on t h e Q u a l i t v of t h e M a t e r i a l s and on T h e i r Employment
1.1. Concrete
I n o r d e r t o o b t a i n a p r o p e r f a c i n g which does n o t r e q u i r e r e t o u c h i n g ; which i s always a p p a r e n t , i t i s n e c e s s a r y :
t o use c o n c r e t e s w i t h a g g r e g a t e s of very uniform g r a d i n g o b t a i n e d from a s i n g l e s o u r c e ;
t o use b i n d e r s of uniform c o l o u r , 1.e. coming from t h e same p l a n t and b e i n g o f t h e same c l a s s and type.
Idhen, f o r r e a s o n s o f economy, o n l y a s i n g l e s u r f a c e l a y e r a few crn t h i c k c o n s t i t u t e s t h e f a c i n g s p e c i a l c a r e h a s t o be t a k e n t o a v o i d any i n t e r f e r e n c e w i t h t h e mass c o n c r e t e , s i n c e t h i s can pro- duce an u n s i g h t l y e f f e c t ( F i g . 1).
Any c o n c r e t e t h a t i s t o remain v i s i b l e should be v i b r a t e d s o a s t o i n c r e a s e i t s d e n s i t y and t o e l i m i n a t e a i r bubbles. The b e s t method a p p e a r s t o be i n t e r n a l v i b r a t i o n , n o t c a r r i e d t o o f a r i n o r d e r t o a v o i d s e g r e g a t i o n . For t h i s purpose one may a l t e r n a t e l y p l a c e and v i b r a t e t h e c o n c r e t e uniformly by s u c c e s s i v e t h i n l a y e r s . I f t h e h e i g h t of t h e l i f t i s t o o g r e a t t h e a i r i s unable t o r i s e and escape ( p u n c t u r i n g s i m u l t a n e o u s l y a l o n g t h e formwork f a c i l i t a t e s t h e r e l e a s e of t h e b u b b l e s ) .
The use of admixtures and a i r e n t r a i n e r s i s d e l i c a t e because t h e mixture i s r a r e l y c o n s t a n t and c o l o u r v a r i a t i o n s of a more o r l e s s s e r i o u s n a t u r e may a r i s e , depending on t h e c o m p a t i b i l i t y of t h e admixtures w i t h c e r t s i n b i n d e r s o r a g g r e g a t e s , which i s n o t always a s s u r e d .
The t i n t i n g of t h e c o n c r e t e by means of dyes c o n t a i n e d i n t h e mixing w a t e r i s d i f f i c u l t t o keep c o n s t a n t . I t should t h e r e f o r e be a p p l i e d o n l y t o c e r t a i n s e p z r a t e u n i t s such as m u l l i o n s and
transoms. On brcad s u r f a c e s comparatively p u r e r a i n w a t e r may cause t h e lime t o s e p a r a t e o u t from t h e cement a f t e r a t i m e , l e a v i n g
d i s t i n c t t r a c e s .
The p r e c a u t i o n s t o be t a k e n a f t e r s e t t i n g must n o t be n e g l e c t e d ( d r y i n g o u t , f r e e z i n g , e t c . )
1.2. Formwork
Formwork must b e :
e a s y t o s t r i p ( smooth and vrel-1 p r o t e c t e d ) ;
impermeable and r i g i d . ; a n y p e r m e a b i l i t y w i l l r e s u l t i n i n h o m o g e n e i t i e s a t r i g h t a n g l e s t o t h e J o i n t s w i t h l e a k s o f l a i t a n c e . Absence of r i g i d i t y w l l l produce i r r e g u l a r i - t i e s o f s u r f a c e ( F i g . 2 ) . C o a t i n g s a p p l i e d t o t h e formwork f o r i t s p r o t e c t i o n o r t o f a c i l i t a t e s t r i p p i n g ( o i l s , v a r n i s h , p a i n t , e t c . ) must n o t a t t a c k t h e c o n c r e t e . 1.3. ( b ) P l a c i n r ~ of t h e c o n c r e t e : I n p l z c i n g one must a v o l d : s e g r e g a t i o n s ; t h e forination of b l i s t e r s ; u n s i g h t l y c o n s t r u c t i o n j o i n t s ; f o r t h i s purpose a c a r e f u l s t u d y of t h e a r c h i t e c t u r e should e n a b l e t h e b u i l d e r t o make every c o n s t r u c t l o n j o i n t c o i n c i d e with a break i n t h e facade. This important p r l n c l p l e h a s been recommended and s u p p l i e d b y t h e great advocate of c o n c r e t e a r c h i t e c t u r e , Auguste P e r r e t ( F i g . 3).
I t i s p o s s i b l e t o avoid t h e s e d i s a d v a n t a g e s e i t h e r by i n t r o - d u c i n g t h e c o n c r e t e a t t h e bottom of t h e fornwork o r by d i s c h a r g i n g
i t a t as low a l e v e l as p o s s i b l e with t h e a i d of a c h u t e , and i n any c a s e by a p p l y i n g t h i n l a y e r s ( 2 5 t o 30 cm maximum).
There should be c a r e f u l v i b r a t i o n , e s p e c i a l l y c l o s e t o t h e forms, but n o t t o o prolonged and above a l l r e g u l a r .
I n p a r t i c u l a r , v i b r a t i o n by means of t h e forms, when e x c e s s i v e - l y prolonged, produces p a r t i a l , i r r e g u l a r s e g r e g a t i o n of t h e c o n c r e t e w i t h an e x c e s s of l a i t a n c e c l o s e t o t h e forms. T h i s i m p a r t s a
r a t h e r d l sagmeable marbled appearance t o t h e f a c i n g .
Remedy: Remove forms a f t e r s e t t i n g i s complete and u s e a c u r i n g t r e a t m e n t depending on t h e type of b i n d e r , e s p e c i a l l y where s l a g cements a r e involved,

With t h e s e methods t h e c o n c r e t e n o t only r e t a i n s i t s s k i n , b u t i s n o t s u b j e c t e d a t a r e l a t i v e l y young age t o v a r i o u s mechanical t r e a t m e n t s which may d i s r u p t i t on t h e s u r f a c e , f r e q u e n t l y s t a r t c r a c k s and d e s t r o y t h e zone of t h e c o n c r e t e which i s p a r t i c u l a r l y impermeable, namely t h e s k i n ,
The appearance depends on t h e kind of formwork used and v a r i e s g-reatly,
( e ) Aging
Aging i s g e n e r a l l y very uniform. I r r e g u l a r i t i e s of appearance a r e g e n e r a l l y due t o t h e l o c a l t r i c k l i n g of r a i n w a t e r down t h e
facade. T'nis i s p r i m a r i l y a n a r c l ? i t e c t u r a l problem.
However, rough-cas t f a c i n g s provide a c o n t i n u o u s veneer which may emphasize variations of hue o r s t a i n s , b u t which I s e a s y t o c l e a n .
Cracks can be l o c a l i z e d by t h e p r o v i s i o n of l i n e s o f l e a s t
r e s i s t a n c e and by l i m i t i n g t h e dlrnensions of t h e u n i t s , s i n c e c r a c k s on a f l a t f a c i n g a r e always u n s i g h t l y .

The p r o c e s s i s more popular I n p r e f a b r i c a t i o n because f a i r l y p r e c i s e time i n t e r v a l s have t o be observed i f i t i s t o be s u c c e s s f u l and t h e o p e r a t i o n must n o t be pushed too f a r f o r f e a r of d i s l o d g i n g t h e pebbles.
The c o n c r e t e c o n t i n u e s s e t t i n g a f t e r t h e treatment;. This does n o t a f f e c t t h e mass and t h e r e f o r e t h e l a t t e r r e t a i n s i t s impermea-
b i l i t y and mechanical s t r e n g t h p r o p e r t i e s .
The appearance, v:hich depends on t h e p e b b l e s , i s a g r e e a b l e , The c o s t of t h e shop o p e r a t i o n i s low, provided t h e p r o c e s s i s p r o p e r l y executed.
( e ) A,qiny, rnaiy1tena~ce :

On smooth f a c i n g s (rough-cast o r pumiced) s t a i n s show up more c l e a r l y , b u t a r e e a s i e r t o wash o f f .
The rugged f a c i n g s , e s p e c i a l l y t h e sand-blasted and washed ones, seem t o d i s p e r s e t h e d i r t and t o m i t i g a t e i t s u n s i g h t l i n e s s by reason of t h e v a r i e g a t e d background of s t o n e s .
Thus, c o n s i d e r i n g only t h e appearance i n a s s e s s i n g t h e a g i n g a b i l i t y of a c o n c r e t e , t h e b e s t f a c i n g s appear t o be t h e rough-cast f o r a l l ' c a s e s , and washed o r sand-blasted ones f o r u n i t s of small dimensions.
