Demographic Tables for the Western Pacific Region 2000-2005

INTRODUCTION

This document is the first edition of a brief compendium of population data prepared for use by WHO programmes and other interested parties. WHO encourages the use of a single set of population data for WPR in order to ensure comparability of population-based health data across the numerous domains addressed by WHO programmes.

The sources of data in the tables are the UN 2001 World Population Prospects, (2000 revision) prepared by the Population Division of the United Nations; the SPC (2001) Population Projections, unpublished, Noumea, New Caledonia; UN 2001 World Urbanization Prospects, (1999 revision); Urban and Rural Areas 1999 chart of the UN Department of Economics and Social Affairs Population Division, and the WPRO's Country Health Information Profiles.

The World Population Prospects, revised every two years, provides a wealth of information on a variety of topics. The matrices provide data by broad demographics and by subjects that are relevant to WPRO in fommlating a relevant database for the Region. The World Urbanization Prospects presents estimates and projections of the total, urban and rural populations of the world.

The Secretariat of the South Pacific Community provided current data and projections for all 22 Pacific Island nations (there are five in Melanesia, seven in Micronesia and ten in Polynesia), excluding Australia and New Zealand. Technical consultations were made with these agencies in estimating the Population characteristics of these countries.

Table 1. The mid-year population estimate is presented by 5-year age group and by sex for the years 2000, 2005 and 2010.

Table 2. Displays the annual population estimates by sex and sex ratio for the year 2000 to 2005.

Table 3. Provides the annual 5-year age break down by sex including percentage distribution for the year 2000 to 2005.

Table 4. Divided into two parts and presents the annual population estimates by country for selected age groups, by sex and age distribution for 2000 to 2005 that includes:

Table 4A. Population characteristics in each country: dependants (0-14, >60 years), reproductive age group (15-44 & 15-49 years of age); infants (<I year); Pre-school (1-4, 5, 6 years); Adolescents (15-19, 20-24 years); School going age (6-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-24 years), working ages (25-49, 50-59, 50-64 years), post-retirement age (60-69, 65-79 years) and late old age (>80 years).

Table 4B. Percentage distribution of the specific age groups in table 4A by country.

Table 5. Shows the population growth per annum, urban population and percentage of

urban population to total population, growth per annum of urban and rural populations and

population density per square kilometre.

Table 6. Divided into two parts and presents different population characteristics:

Table 6A. shows crude birth rate, crude death rate, net migration rate, sex-ratio and median age.

Table 6B. shows infant mortality rate, child mortality(< 5 years), life expectancy at birth, total fertility rate and net reproduction rate.

Table 7. Shows the two dependency ratios, based on 60+ cut-off and based on 65+ cut-off.

Additional information on population by single age group and technical notes on population estimates are available upon request. WHO strives to improve the selection and presentation of population and other health-related data as a tool in the work of WHO. Any enquiries or comments are welcome and kindly send message to:
