Résumé - Les f a c t e u r s s t r u c t u r a u x e t é l e c t r o n i q u e s q u i c o n t r i b u e n t au magné- t i s m e de s u r f a c e du f e r o n t é t é é t u d i é s en comparant l e s r é s u l t a t s de l a pho- t o é m i s s i o n des s u r f a c e s (100) du Fe C . C . avec ceux des f i l m s u l t r a - m i n c e s de Fe c . f . c . é p i t a x i é s p a r c r o i s s a n c e s u r des s u b s t r a t s de Cu(100), C u ( l l 0 ) e t C u ( l l 1 ) . Le i l m s c . f . c . de Fe s u r l e s s u r f a c e s (100) du Cu s o n t a n t i f e r r o - magnétiquesf If, d ' a p r è s des r é s u l t a t s a n t é r i e u r s , a l o r s q u ' i l s p r n t e n t un

o r d r e f e r r o m a g n é t i q u e avec un moment magnétique l o c a l de 0,58 ug r é d u i t p a r r a p p o r t à sa v a l e u r de 2,2 p~ dans l e Fe c . c . , s u r l e s s u r f a c e s ( 1 1 0 ) e t ( 1 1 1 ) du Cu. L ' a n a l y s e de l a forme des p i c s de photoémission du Fe C . C . sug- g è r e que l a l e v é e de l a dégénérescence de l ' é c h a n g e de l ' o r d r e de 2,5 PB, e s t accentuée à l a s u r f a c e e t q u ' e l l e donne naissance dans l ' é t a t f i n a l à des e f - f e t s d ' é c r a n a u t o u r des t r o u s é l e c t r o n i q u e s , f o n c t i o n du s p i n . C e l a m o n t r e que l e s e f f e t s d'échange e t de c o r r é l a t i o n s o n t i m p o r t a n t s pour l e f e r , com- me d é j à observé pour l e n i c k e l ( 3 ) . Les s p e c t r e s de photoémission r é v è l e n t a u s s i l ' i n c i d e n c e de l ' é m i s s i o n à p a r t i r des bandes é l e c t r o n i q u e s p l a t e s de s u r f a c e . Ceci masque e f f e c t i v e m e n t t o u s l e s e f f e t s d i r e c dus aux éléments

1de l a m a t r i c e de t r a n s i t i o n l i é e aux bandes d de volume . Ces r é s u l t a t s s e r o n t d i s c u t é s : dans l e c o n t e x t e de l e u r i n f l u e n c e s u r l e s e f f e t s magné- t i q u e s à l a s u r f a c e des métaux ferromagnétiques, e t en l i a i s o n avec l ' i m p o r - t a n c e des c o r r e c t i o n s de s e l f e n e r g i e dépendant du s p i n p o u r l ' a n a l y s e des r é s u l t a t s de photoémission.
A b s t r a c t - S t r u c t u r a l a n d e l e c t r o n i c f a c t o r s c o n t r i b u t i n g t o t h e s u r f a c e ma- g n e t i s m o f i r o n have been s t u d i e d by comparing p h o t o e m i s s i o n r e s u l t s f r o m b.c.c. F e ( 1 0 0 ) s u r f a c e s w i t h u l t r a - t h i n f . c . c . i r o n f i 1 m s g r o w n e p i t a x i a l l y o n Cu(100), C u ( l l 0 ) and C u ( l l 1 ) s u b s t r a t e s . P r e v i o u s r e s u l t s h a p r e d i c t e d t h a t

whereas t h e f . c . c . f i l m s grown on Cu(100) a r e a n t i f e r r o i n a g n e t i c those grown on C u ( l l 0 ) and Cu( a r e f e r r o m a g n e t i c a l l y o r d e r e d w i t h a reduced l o c a l moment o f O 5 8 pg thi!ompared w i t h b.c.c. i r o n , 2.2 ug. Photoemission 1 ineshape
a n a l y s i s o f t h e b.c.c. i r o n suggests ari enhanced exchange s p l i t t i n g a t t h e s u r - f a c e o f t h e o r d e r o f 2.5 UB g i v i n g r i s e t o spin-dependent h o l e - s c r e e n i n g e f - f e c t s i n t h e f i n a l s t a t e i . e . , ex h nge and c o r r e l a t i o n e f f e c t s a r e i m p o r t a n t i n i r o n , as i s observed i n n i ~ k e l ~ ~ ~ . The photoemission s p e c t r a a l s o r e v e a l t h e i n c i d e n c e o f e m i s s i o n f r o m r e l a t i v e l y f l a t s u r f a c e S t a t e s bands w h i c h ef-.

These r e s u l t s w i l l be discussed i n t h e c o n t e x t o f t h e i r r e l e v a n - ce f o r magnetic e f f e c t s a t f e r r o m a g n e t i c metal s u r f a c e s , a n d t h e importance o f spin-dependent s e l f energy c o r r e c t i o n s i n p h o t o e m i s s i o n a n a l y s i s .
