BOVINE TUBERCULOSIS
(Provisional Agenda Item P. 6.19)
As noted by the WHO Expert Committee on Tuberculosis 1
tuberculous cattle comprise an important source of tuberculosis for human beings throughout the world.
Furthermore, the disease in cattle causes enormous losses 'annually in vitally needed food products.
The control of this disease in livestock"' is a long and costly venture. Recently, however, significant advances have been made in the diagnosis and control of bovine tuberculosis which should be very useful in more effectively meeting this problem particularly from an economical standpoint. These methods will be discussed fully at the next meeting of the WHO Expert Committee on Tuberculosis which meets in September of this year.
The Committee on Programme, therefore, might wish to recommend to the Third World Health Assembly the adoption of the following resolution:
In view of the importance of bovine tuberculosis as a reservoir of human disease, as emphasized by the WHO Expert Committee on Tuberculosis1 and, Recognizing the economical importance of this disease with respect to the world's food supply,
The Third World Health Assembly
REQUESTS the Director-General, in collaboration with other specialized agencies and other organizations, wherever possible, to.encourage investigations and to lend technical assistance to countries upon request in the control of bovine tuberculosis.
