ORIGINAL: ENGLISH RHEUMATIC DISEASES

Proposal by the Delegation of the Government of Denmark (Supplementary Agenda Item 6.2.2)

The Danish delegation wishes to draw the attention of the Third World Health Assembly to the fact that:

(l) rheumatic diseases in many countries, especially those in the temperate zones, are of major importance in human, social and economic respects because of their greater prevalence in comparison with that of several

other somatic diseases, and also because of the fact that a great num- ber of people are invalided by these diseases;

(2) the International League against Rheumatism, now in official relation- ship with WHO,^" has requested the active assistance of the Organization in the research activities of the League;

(3) WHO has not yet taken action in this field; and

(4) according to the Constitution and functions of W H O , it would appear that such diseases might be included among the topics dealt with in the programme of the Organization.

It is therefore proposed that the Programme Committee recommend to the Third

World Health Assembly the adoption of the following resolution:

The Third World Health Assembly

' • • i ' . Recognizing the importance of the social and economic problems resulting from the prevalence of Rheumatic Diseases,

REQUESTS the Executive Board and the Director-General, when drawing up the Programme and Budget for 1952, to include therein suitable provision for an Expert Committee on Rheumatic Diseases and the necessáry services for such Committee.

Cost estimates for an average expert committee are annexed.
