I n v e s t i g a t i o n of the p h y s i c o - c h e m i c a l i n f l u e n c e of e l e c t r o l y t e s on t h e b e h a v i o u r of L e d a c l a y , p a r t i c u l a r l y the s h e a r s t r e n g t h and the s e n s i t i v i t y , i s being c a r r i e d out.

T h e o r i e n t a t i o n of c l a y m i n e r a l s i n n a t u r a l c l a y s i s b e i n g s t u d i e d u s i n g o p t i c a l r e f r a c t i o n t e c h n i q u e s on thin s e c t i o n s . T h e r m a l conductivity of L e d a c l a y h a s b e e n d e t e r m i n e d f o r v a r i o u s d e n s i t i e s and c l a y c o n t e n t u s i n g s t e a d y s t a t e h e a t flow t e c h n i q u e s . S t u d i e s a r e continuing on the s h e a r s t r e n g t h , swelling and consolidation c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of highly p l a s t i c c l a y s , c l a y s h a l e s , and compacted clays. R e c e n t t e s t s on compacted c l a y s using high a i r

e n t r y porous s t o n e s have allowed m e a s u r e m e n t of negative p o r e p r e s s u r e s and have shown c o n s i d e r a b l y different s t r e n g t h p a r a m e t e r s f o r undrained and consolidated undrained t e s t s than s i m i l a r t e s t s using low a i r e n t r y p o r o u s s t o n e s .

Investigational work i s being c a r r i e d out to study the m o s t suitab le m e a n s of d e t e r m i n i n g m i n i m u m and maxim!im d e n s i t y f o r r e l a t i v e d e n s i t y computations and field c o n t r o l .

Cutbank, Sask:

The Rapid Compaction T e s t on cohesive s o i l s and the Relative Density T e s t on non-cohesive s o i l s as developed by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation a r e being used f o r field control testing. Both methods appear quite s a t i s f a c t o r y although s o m e modifications to the Rapid Compaction T e s t p r o c e d u r e have been required.

Queen's University:

Work is continuing upon a study of the f a c t o r s that affect the s t r e n g t h of varved clays. P o r e p r e s s u r e m e a s u r e m e n t s a r e being observed i n e a c h of the layers. P r e s e n t work is b a s e d upon a constant r a t e of s t r a i n and the work will be extended to include varying r a t e of s t r a i n in the coming year. A p r e l i m i n a r y study of the consolidation c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of v a r v e d s o i l s h a s a l s o been initiated.

T o s t u d y t h e r e c o v e r y of u n d i s t u r b e d s a m p l e s of l o o s e s a n d s

a n d s i l t s f r o m below t h e w a t e r t a b l e t h r e e t y p e s of s a m p l e r s i n c o n j u n c t i o n with a n d without t h e u s e of a h e a v y b e n t o n i t i c s l u r r y w e r e u s e d d u r i n g foundation i n v e s t i g a t i o n s i n a g l a c i a l valley. T h r e e - i n c h open s h e l b y t u b e

s a m p l e s w e r e c o m p a r e d with t h o s e obtained with a .floating p i s t o n a n d a f i x e d p i s t o n s a m p l e r . It w a s found that the d r i l l i n g fluid h a d a g r e a t e r e f f e c t upon s a m p l e r e c o v e r y than d i d the s a m p l e r type. S a t i s f a c t o r y s a m p l e s w e r e obtained to d e p t h s of 350 ft. u s i n g the h e a v y d r i l l i n g fluid.

A m o b i l e s o i l t e s t i n g l a b o r a t o r y w a s d e v e l o p e d a n d built. Mounted i n a highway- type t r a i l e r , the l a b o r a t o r y h a s f a c i l i t i e s f o r a l l s t a n d a r d s o i l t e s t s e x c e p t t r i a x i a l a n d c o n s o l i d a t i o n . It a l s o s e r v e s a s a f i e l d office. I t c a r r i e s i t s own h e a t i n g a n d e l e c t r i c a l s y s t e m a n d a n a i r c o m p r e s s o r , to b e s e l f - s u f f i c i e n t i n r e m o t e a r e a s . D s F . Detailed field s t u d i e s of the distribution and o c c u r r e n c e of p e r m a f r o s t a t Thompson, Manitoba, w e r e c a r r i e d out during the F a l l of 1961 and the Spring of 1962. T h e s e s t u d i e s included o b s e r v a t i o n s of ground t e m p e r a t u r e s , t e r r a i n f a c t o r s ( r e l i e f d r a i n a g e and vegetation), s o i l conditions and the distribution of i c e within the s o i l s . F i e l d

investigations of the p e r f o r m a n c e of engineering s t r u c t u r e s i n this region of discontinuous p e r m a f r o s t w e r e a l s o initiated.

Drilling i n the F o r t Churchill a r e a involved the u s e of cooled d i e s e l f u e l and b r i n e in o r d e r to r e c o v e r f r o z e n c o r e . W h e r e the p e r m a f r o s t c o n s i s t e d of c o a r s e g r a n u l a r m a t e r i a l , the i c e did not provide a sufficient bond and blocking and caving o c c u r r e d . However, using "L" s e r i e s d r i l l i n g equipment, c o r e r e c o v e r y was about 70 p e r cent. T h i s c o m p a r e d favourably with previous e x p e r i e n c e i n s i m i l a r m a t e r i a l w h e r e r e c o v e r y was about half t h i s amount using N X s i z e d r i l l i n g equipment.
