SUMMARY
EFFECT OF BREED AND FEEDING ON SEXUAL PRECOCITY IN THE SOW
An
experiment
on 162 young sows was made in order tostudy the
influence of breed andfeeding
on various measurements of thegenital
tract taken out afterslaughter
of the animals at 95kg
liveweight.
The femalepigs
of the « double muscle otype (Belgian
Landrace andPietrain)
were
compared
with controls of the French Landrace. The animals received ad libitum a diet pro-viding
300o kcal or 3 3oo kcal ofdigestible energy/kg
and4 8
or 60 g ofprotein/i
ooo kcal ofdigest
energy. After dissection of the
genital
tract, the two uterine horns and thevagina
were measuredand
weighed.
The ovaries wereweighed
and dividedinto q classes
ofmaturity according
to thenumber and size of the follicles as well as to the presence of
Corpora
lutea.According
to thematurity
of their ovaries, itappeared
that at aliveweight
of 95kg,
the females of the Pietrain breed weresexually
moreprecocious
than the French Landvacefemales,
which showed earlierpuberty
than theBelgian
Landrace.Although
the age differences between the ani- malspartially explain
theseresults,
the same order between breeds was noted in animals of compa- rable ages. The
feeding
did notsignificantly
affect thematurity
of the ovaries.However,
in the Pietrainbreed,
the feeds with ahigh
content ofdigestible
energy tended todelay puberty.
It may be thata
larger
difference in the energy would haveemphasized
these tendences.The
weight
andlength
of the uterus increased withprogressing maturity
of the ovaries and this was all the morepronounced
at the time ofpuberty.
On the other hand, theweight
andlength
of the
vagina
did notchange.

RÉSUMÉ
L’étude a été menée sur 60 verrats
Large
White obtenus en 6générations
par sélection intra-famille dans 10familles( 50 couples père-fils).
Ces verrats ont été collectés en moyenne une fois par semainependant
15mois,
cependant,
le
pourcentage
deséjaculais ayant
un taux élevé despermatozoïdes
mobiles décroîtsignificativement

où la fertilité chute defaçon importante.
Le fait d’avoirlogé

des verratsdans un bâtiment dont la
température
maximale était dei8oC,

la chute de ferti- lité estivale.Les héritabilités de volume de sperme par

SUMMARY
FACTORS DETERMINING THE VARIATION IN THE PRODUCTION AND
QUALITY
OF BOAR SEMEN: SEASONALEFFECTS, H!RITABII,ITY,
CORRELATIONS BETWEEN VARIABLESThe
study
was made on 60Large
White boars obtained within 6generations by intra-family
selection in 10families
( 50
sire-sonpairs).
The semen of these boars wascollected,
on an average, once a week for i5 months from the age
of months.
The sperm was used in artificial insemination. The
prolificacy
andfertility (measured
in p. ioo offarrowings
after oneonly
artificial insemi-nation)
reached a maximum levelalready
from the first 3 months of utilization. All the characters of the sperm were
only slightly subjected
to seasonal variations.However,
thepercentage
ofejaculates
with ahigh
content of motilespermatozoa significantly
decreasedduring
the summer,period
where thefertility
was much lower. The fact thatpart
of the boarswere housed at a maximum
temperature
of i8oC did not avoid thelowering
offertility during
thesummer.
The heritabilities of the volume of sperm per
collecting,
of the latentperiod
between the mo-ment when the boar is
put
before themannequin
and themounting,
of the spermmotility
andof the
fertility
were low(o.io ;
0.07 ; o.zo and 0.20,respectively). Conversely,
thefollowing
charac-ters can be considered as
moderately
heritable(thus offering
apossibility
ofselection) :
totalnumber of
spermatozoa
perejaculate (h 2
=0 . 35 ), percentage
ofejaculates
with ahigh
contentof motile
spermatozoa (h 2
=o.z 3 )
and direct effect of the boar on the litter size at birth(h 2
=0 . 35 )
The heritabilities of
fertilityand prolificacy arehigher during
thesummer and autumn ascompared
to the rest of the year, which
might
indicate the existence of ahereditary predisposition
in favourof a resistance to the unfavourable conditions at summertime.
Most of the correlations between the variables studied were small
except
for two of themwhich were
highly significant :
on the onehand,
the correlation betweenfertility
andprolificacy (r
=0 . 51 )
showed thatculling
of thepoorly
fertile boarsimproved
the littersize,
on the other hand, thehighly significant
correlation between the mean volume of theejaculate
and the total number ofspermatozoa (r
=0 . 50 ), despite
the poorness ofspermatozoa
in the second half of theejaculate, emphasizes
therelationship
between the factorsstimulating
thespermatogenesis
and the
production
of the accessoryglands.
