It is well known from earlier measurements that, when heavy ions are implanted into diamond at low energy, an amorphous layer builds up at the
13 2 surface when the ion dose is raised above 10 at/cm.
We report here the first observation of this pheno- menon by Msssbauer Spectroscopy.
1 3 3 ~ e has been implanted into natural diamond sto- nes (type I A and I1 B) with doses varying between 5. 1012 and 1.5 1014 at/cm 2
.
The Msssbauer spectra show a strong dependence on the ion dose; this be- haviour is attributed to one of the spectral lines (-0.20 f 0.05 mm/s) arising from Xe atoms in an a- morphous surrounding. This line is suppressed when the diamonds are kept at 600'~ during implantation, or when the implantation is followed by thermal an- nealing above 1000°~. The same line appears when the diamond is amorphized after low dose Xe implan- tation, by irradiation with 80 keV He ions up to17 2 5.10 at/cm
.
Apart from the amorphous line, several other components are also present in the spectra. One of them is quadrupole split, pointing towards a vacan- cy associated site. The other ones are situated at high negative velocities, indicating very high s-electron densities. A line at -2.73 f 0.07 mm/s is only present after heat treatment. These high s-densities might arise from a volume compression effect, which will distort the 5s wave functions and/or delocalize the 5p orbitals.
