Abstract. The outgoing charge d i s t r i b t i o n s o f sulphur i o n s i n t h e 32-48 MeV bombarding energy range, with i n i t i a l charges S" t o

s ' ~

have been measured a f t e r small impact parameter c o l l i s i o n s . Trends s i m i l a r t o those p r e v i o u s l y observed with oxygen p r o j e c t i l e s were observed, namely an almost complete independence of t h e outgoing charge d i s t r i b u t i o n s on t h e incoming charge s t a t e . The dynamic screening model was used t o c a l c u l a t e t h e average outgoing charge s t a t e and gave s a t i s f a c t o r y agreements f o r t h e S+Ar and S+Kr cases. For t h e S+Xe c a s e , promotion e f f e c t s o f t h e sulphur i n n e r s h e l l e l e c t r o n s had t o be included t o account f o r t h e experimental r e s u l t s .

P r o j e c t i l e charge s t a t e d i s t r i b u t i o n s a f - t e r c o l l i s i o n s with impact parameters much smal- l e r than t h e K-shell r a d i i of t h e c o l l i d i n g p a r t - n e r were s t u d i e d by Rosner 6 Gur [ I ] f o r s i n g l e c o l l i s i o n s between oxygen and noble gases. I t was found t h a t f o r heavy t a r g e t s t h e charge d i s - t r i b u t i o n s o f t h e s c a t t e r e d i o n s a f t e r such col- l i s i o n s were i n s e n s i t i v e t o t h e incoming projec- t i l e charge s t a t e a s well as t o t h e e x a c t v a l u e of t h e impact parameter a s r e f l e c t e d by t h e s c a t - t e r i n g angle. These r e s u l t s i n d i c a t e t h a t under t h e above s t a t e d c o n d i t i o n s , e q u i l i b r i u m charge d i s t r i b u t i o n i s achieved i n a s i n g l e c o l l i s i o n . S t a t i s t i c a l c a l c u l a t i o n s based on t h e dynamic s c r e e n i n g of t h e p r o j e c t i l e succeeded v e r y w e l l i n reproducing t h e values of t h e average out- going charge s t a t e s [Z].

In t h e experiment r e p o r t e d h e r e , s u l - phur p r o j e c t i l e s with i n i t i a l charges +6 t o +9 and energ4es o f 3 2 , 40 and 48 MeV obtained from t h e U. o f P i t t s b u r g h tandem a c c e l e r a t o r were used. The outgoing charge s t a t e d i s t r i b u t i o n s a f t e r . s i n g l e c o l l i s i o n s w i t h A r , K r and Xe atoms a t a s c a t t e r i n g angle of 5' were determined by means o f an experimental s e t - u p s i m i l a r t o t h e one described i n [ I ] . In f i g u r e 1 t h e r e s u l t s f o r 40 MeV bombarding energy a r e shown. Again t h e outgoing charge d i s t r i b u t i o n s a r e p r a c t i c a l l y independent of t h e incoming charge s t a t e .

There i s a reasonable agreement between t h e experimental average outgoing charge s t a t e s and t h o s e c a l c u l a t e d by t h e dynamic screening model f o r t h e A r and K r t a r g e t s . However f o r t h e Xe t a r g e t t h e experimental values exceed t h e t h e o r e t i c a l p r e d i c t i o n by about 0.7 charge u n i t s .

A p o s s i b l e e x p l a n a t i o n o f t h i s discrepan- cy i s t h e presence o f an electron-promotion me- chanism superimposed on t h e s t a t i s t i c a l process.

Figure 2 shows t h e molecular o r b i t a l s ' diagrams f o r t h e t h r e e d i f f e r e n t systems. Since t h e elec- t r o n v e l o c i t y i n t h e 3d s h e l l of Xe i s of t h e o r d e r o f magnitude of t h e p r o j e c t i l e v e l o c i t y , e l e c t r o n s from t h i s s h e l l a r e e a s i l y e x c i t e d [3]

while t h e i n t e r n u c l e a r d i s t a n c e i s s t i l l l a r g e . On f u r t h e r approach 1s e l e c t r o n s can be promoted t o t h e s e vacancies by r o t a t i o n a l coupling. An i n - c r e a s e i n t h e outgoing charge s t a t e i s then f u r - t h e r enhanced by Auger t r a n s i t i o n s .

In t h e S+Kr system, t h e 1s sulphur o r b i t a l c r o s s e s only t i g h t l y bound l e v e l s and promotion i s not p o s s i b l e . The S+Ar system i s v e r y i n t e r e s t - i n g . For t h e S + A r +6 as w e l l a s h i g h e r i n i t i a l charge s t a t e s t h e sulphur 2s and 2p o r b i t a l s a r e lower than t h e corresponding A r l e v e l s [4] and t h e Is sulphur l e v e l does n o t c r o s s any A r l e v e l . There i s a p o s s i b i l i t y o f " s e l f promotion'' o f t h e 1s e l e c t r o n s t o h i g h e r s u l p h u r s t a t e s and subse- quent l o s s by Auger decay. However t h i s small

e f f e c t would be l a r g e l y neutralized by t r a n s f e r r a d i a l coupling when t h e i n t e r n u c l e a r distance of 1s A r electrons t o t h e 1s sulphur vacancies by increases again.
