Introduction

This note gives the current status of the Transafrican Highway sec tion in K^nya and identifies the type of work needed to U, done.

Status of the TAB, and actions required thereon

The Trarsafrican Highway section in" Kenya, from Mombasa to Lagos, which is 919 km. in length, is bitumen surfaced. For the most ,,art, the road has a pavement width of 6,1 metres and capacity to carry 9000 lb.

(4000 kg.) wheel load. However, plans are now well underway to widen the

pavement to 7 metres and to strengthen the pavement for a 12,000 lb. (5333 kg.) wheel load, se.n Table 1.

Cost estimst^s

The total cost of the improvement works is estimated at about US

$50.3 million, sfie Table II, and this is composed of:

14.^ mil $ - for projects whose construction is in progress

or expected to start soon.

32.2 mil % - for trojects whose engineering design is under

way or planned.

3.5 mil % - for sections which need upgrading, but their improvements have been deferred for the time

being,

It should be not*d tiiat of the totel cost of $50-3 million, about

$10.1 million is for urban streets.

Construction and maintenance costs

Flat aud rolling: Ks^OjOOO/km. or US$84,000/km. &

Hilly: K£40,000/W or US$112,OOO/km.

Mountainous; K£50,000/km. or US$140,000/km.

Th? construction cost for bridges is about KX600 or US$1680 per

metre span.

The maintenance cost for a bitumen surfaced road is 13.48 sh. or US$1,89 P-^r kilometre p^r day.

Responsibility for roads

The Ministry of Works is responsible for the construction and main tenance of roads.

In recant years the Ministry of Works has executed about 30 per.

cent of the final design of ths roads, witn the remaining 70 p*?r cert be ing done by consultants, It is understood that the Ministry intends to increase its portion of ths design work to at least 50 per cent. This, however, will require additions to the Ministry's professional staff.

Classification

Wh«r. considering the alignment of the Transafrioan Highway as a whole in the six territories through which it passes from Mombasa to Lagos, the sections of the Highway in each country aie classified under foul

categories (see Annex;:

Category A: Sections of the Highway which still require:

i) Feasibility studies;

ii) ijinginaering studies;

iii) Work implementation.

Category B; Sections of the HiGhway which still require:
