Résumé.- Des monocristaux de UÛ2+X avec une large gamme des rapports 0/U ont été déformés plastiquement à 600°, 1000° et 1400°C. Le glissement se produit sur les plans {100},{111} ou sur des combinaisons noncristallogra- phiques de plans {100} - {lll} et {lll} - {110}, mais toujours avec des vecteurs de Burgers1/2<110>.Les basses températures et les rapports 0/U élevés favorisent le glissement {lll} <110> par rapport aux deux glisse- ments {100} <110> et {110} <110> ; toutefois, 1'anisotropie plastique est généralement faible.
A b s t r a c t . - Single c r y s t a l s of U02+x with a wide range of 0/U r a t i o s were p l a s t i c a l l y deformed a t 600°, 1000 and 1400°C. Slip occurred on {100} p l a n e s ,
{ i l l } planes, or on non-crystallographic combinations of {100} - { i l l } and { i l l } - {110} p l a n e s , b u t a l l with 1/2<110>Burgers v e c t o r s . Low temperatures and high 0/U r a t i o s favored { i l l } <110> s l i p over both {100} <110> and {110}
<I10> ; however, p l a s t i c anisotropy was generally small.

T e s t s were conducted i n a p p r o p r i a t e CO/C02 m i x t u r e s a t 600°, 1000' and 1400°C i n an I n s t r o n t e s t i n g machine equipped w i t h an i n - s i t u Y 2 0 3 - s t a b i l i z e d Zr02 s e n s o r t o measure p I n i t i a l s t r a i n r a t e s were a p p r o x i m a t e l y5 1 0 - ~ / ~ . 0 2 '
Specimens deformed a l o n g t h e two o r i e n t a t i o n s showed a marked v a r i a t i o n i n s l i p s y s t e m w i t h b o t h t e m p e r a t u r e and O/U r a t i o ( F i g s . 2 and 3 ) . The prim- y s l i p s y s t e m on specimens deformed a l o n g < i 2 3 > a t 600°C was t h e m t h i g h l y s t r e s s e d (111) <110> system. A t 600°C, s p e c i - mens e x h i b i t e d r a p i d h a r d e n i n g a f t e r i n i t i a l y i e l d t o an upper y i e l d p o i n t w i t h a s u b s e q u e n t d r o p i n s t r e s s . Those s a m ~ l e s which were exami- ned a f t e r t e s t s s t o p p e d d u r i n g o r s h o r t l y a f t e r t h i s s t r e s s t r a n s i e n t had secondary t r a c e s on { l o o ) and o t h e r { l l l l p l a n e s due t o s e c o n d a r y systems b e i n g a c t i v a t e d a t h i g h e r a p p l i e d s t r e s s e s .
Specimens of t h i s o r i e n t a t i o n deformed a t 1000°C showed changes i n s l i p s y s t e m s w i t h v a r y i n g O/U r a t i o s : a s shown i n f i g u r e 2. The

most s t o i c h i o m e t r i c specimens were o b s e r v e d t o g l i d e on a ( 1 0 0 ) p l a n e ; however, t h o s e w i t h h i g h e r O/U r a t i o s e x h i b i t e d n o n - c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c s l i p , which was a combination o f s l i p on t h e most h i g h l y s t r e s s e d { l o o } and ( 1 1 1 ) p l a n e s w i t h t h e same primary B u r g e r s v e c t o r . The most h i g h l y s t r e s s e d { 1 1 1 ) < 1 1 0 > system had a d i f f e r e n t B u r g e r s v e c t o r , b u t f a i n t t r a c e s c o r r e s p o n d i n g t o t h i s s y s t e m were s e e n on specimens w i t h O/U r a t i o s 2 2 . 0 1 . A t 1 4 0 0 ° C , s i n g l e s l i p on ( 1 0 0 ) p l a n e s was o b s e r v e d , r e g a r d l e s s o f O/U r a t i o .

I t s h o u l d be emphasized t h a t w h i l e s m a l l v a r i a t i o n s i n t h e com- p r e s s i o n a x i s must a f f e c t t h e o r i e n t a t i o n o f n o n - c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c s l i p p l a n e s , t h e o b s e r v e d s l i p p l a n e d i d n o t u s u a l l y c o r r e s p o n d t o a p l a n e of maximum r e s o l v e d s h e a r s t r e s s . T h i s i s e s p e c i a l l y t r u e f o r t e s t s a t 1000°C f o r <o> a < i 2 3 > , where t h e o b s e r v e d combination of (100) and {ill} p l a n e s had a lower Schmidt f a c t o r t h a n t h e o r i g i n a l {100] <110>
system.
A p a r t i c u l a r l y s t r i k i n g f e a t u r e o f t h e s l i p t r a c e s on a l l s p e c i - mens, whether c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c o r n o t , i s t h e wavy n a t u r e o f t r a c e s p r o - duced by screw d i s l o c a t i o n s . A t y p i c a l example i s shown i n f i g u r e 4 , where t h e t r a c e s on f a c e B a r e q u i t e wavy. The preponderance o f wavy
s l i p i n d i c a t e s t h a t c r o s s - s l i p i s b o t h v e r y e a s y and i m p o r t a n t t o t h e d e f o r m a t i o n p r o c e s s . I t i s , however, g e n e r a l l y n o t p o s s i b l e t o a n a l y z e a c t u a l c r o s s - s l i p p l a n e s by t r a c e a n a l y s i s , even a t v e r y low s t r a i n s .

Although p r i o r work h a s n o t d i s c u s s e d t h e s e t r a n s i t i o n s o f s l i p system w i t h b o t h t e m p e r a t u r e and c o m p o s i t i o n , t h e r e a r e r e s u l t s i n t h e l i t e r a t u r e which a r e comparable t o some o f t h e ~ e s u l t s we have found.
Sawbridge and Sykes /1/ deformed s i n g - . c r y s t a l s i n a r g o n a t 1327OC and found (1111
-
(110) composite s l i p f o r specimens o r i e n t e d s i m i l a r l y t o o u r < 0 2 9 > d i r e c t i o n . Yust and McHargue /2/ performed t e s t s on s p e c i - mens w i t h O/U r a t i o s from 2.03 t o 2.1 and found n o n - c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c s l i p on a v a r i e t y of p l a n e s between {111} and (112) a t 800° and 1000°C, c o r r e s p o n d i n g t o o u r r e s u l t s f o r <o> % <i23>. They had p r e v i o u s l y /3/t e s t e d s i m i l a r c r y s t a l s o f s t o i c h i o m e t r i c composition i n hydrogen be- tween 550°and 1350°C and r e p o r t e d {loo) < 1 1 0 > s l i p . Blank and Ronchi / 4 / r e p o r t e d {111} < 1 1 0 > a s a s l i p s y s t e m i n U02+x s i n g l e c r y s t a l s and s u g g e s t e d t h a t b o t h {loo} < 1 1 0 > and (1111 < 1 1 0 > a r e a b l e t o o p e r a t e i n n o n - s t o i c h i o m e t r i c c r y s t a l s .
The change i n s l i p s y s t e m w i t h t e m p e r a t u r e and c o m p o s i t i o n i s a l m o s t c e r t a i n l y r e l a t e d t o d e f e c t - d i s l o c a t i o n i n t e r a c t i o n s and t h e changes i n d e f e c t s t r u c t u r e s w i t h O/U r a t i o s . T h i s work i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e c h o i c e o f dominant s l i p system i n t h e d e f o r m a t i o n o f U02+x s i n g l e c r y s t a l s i s dependent on U/O r a t i o , t e m p e r a t u r e , and o r i e n t a t i o n . (111) <110> s l i p i s f a v o r e d by low tem- p e r a t u r e s and h i g h O/U r a t i o s , w h i l e (100) <110>

f a v o r e d by h i g h t e m p e r a t u r e s and low O/U r a t i o s .
