WPR/RC36.R4 PROGRAMME ON THE CONTROL OF DIARRHOEAL DISEASES The Regional Committee,

Having considered the report presented by the Regional Director on the work of WHO in the Western Pacific Region for the period 1 July 1983 - 30 June 1985;1

Noting the progress made by the programme in the Region, particularly with regard to the promotion of oral rehydration therapy;

Expressing its concern that the evaluation process to assess the progress achieved and identify problems and constraints in the diarrhoeal diseases control programme is not fully utilized by Member States;

1. RECOMMENDS that Member States further intensify their efforts for the prevention and control of diarrhoeal diseases;

2. URGES those Member States in which diarrhoeal diseases is a public health problem and which do not have national diarrhoeal disease programmes to develop such programmes and ensure adequate resources for them;

3. REQUESTS the Regional Director to cooperate with all Member States with respect to:

(1) the development of national plans of action for the control of diarrhoeal diseases;

(2)

(2) the further promotion of oral rehydration therapy as the most effective form of management of acute diarrhoea 1n the majority of cases;

(3) the strengthening of training activities;

(4) the implementation of regular comprehensive programme reviews or evaluations;

(5) the implementation of preventive measures to reduce diarrhoea incidence, such as improvement of basic sanitation and promotion of breast-feeding and safe weaning practices.
