WPR/RC33.Rl6 INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD FEEDING The Regional Committee,

Recalling resolution WHA33.32 on infant and young child feeding, resolution WHA34.22 by which the World Health Assembly adopted the International Code of Marketing of Breast4Ililk Substitutes, resolution WPR/RC32.Rll on infant and young child feeding and resolution WHA35.26 on the International Code of Marketing of Breast4Ililk Substitutes;

Noting that the Regional Committee is expected to follow up and review the implementation of resolutions WHA34.22 and WPR/RC32.Rll;

Having considered the revised Guiding Member States, as required by resolutions Article 11.6 of the International Code Substitutes;

Principles for reporting by WHA33. 32 and WHA34. 22 and by of Marketing of Breast-milk

Having reviewed the report young child feeding and on International Code of Marketing Pacific Region;l

on action taken in the field of infant and the status of implementation of the of Breast-milk Substitutes in the Western

Noting that, while some Member States have taken measures to improve infant and young child feeding, many have yet to implement the provisions of the International Code and adhere to it: as a "minimum requirement" for the protection of healthy practices, as called for in resolution WHA34.22;

1. URGES Member States to give renewed attention to the development of long-term national programmes to improve infant and young child feeding practices as well as to the need to adopt national legislation, regulations or other suitable measures to give effect t::o the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes;

2. REQUESTS Member States to report annually to the Regional Director on both infant and young child feeding and implementation of the International Code, leaving i t to his discretion to use the material submitted as is required by Articles 11.6 and 11.7 of the International Code and reso:lutions of the World Health· Assembly;

3. REQUESTS the Regional Director to support Member States, as and wh.en requested, in their efforts to improve infant and young child feeding practices as well as measures that are consistent with the letter and spirit of the International Code.
