L a b o r a t o r y t e s t s have been m a d e on t h e e f f e c t of t i m e t o f a i l u r e on p o r e p r e s s u r e s and effective s t r e s s e s i n t r i a x i a l t e s t s of s a m p l e s of w e s t e r n Canadian c l a y s .

L a b o r a t o r y and f i e l d t e s t s w e r e conducted i n which it w a s found t h a t f r o z e n g r a n u l a r m a t e r i a l , even when d r y , could not b e a s thoroughly c o m p a c t e d a s the s a m e m a t e r i a l unfrozen.
