Our Mission: People of God, united in Christ, serving others, welcoming all to the Table of Life

Our Lady of Lourdes † Saint Anne

Dear Friends,

On Wednesday this week we begin the 90th Novena to St. Anne. A “novena” is nine days of prayer in preparation for the celebration of a Church feast day. The Feast of Saint Anne and her husband Saint Joachim, the parents of Mary (and therefore the grandparents of Jesus), is on July 26th. Each evening from the 17th through the 25th we will celebrate evening prayer at 7PM. On the Feast of St. Anne itself we will celebrate Mass at 7PM followed by an ice cream social.

This year the theme of the presentations (20 25 minutes) during evening prayer will be The Challenge and Spirituality of Catholic Social Teaching. What is Catholic Social Teaching? Father Kevin McKenna, pastor of the Cathedral Community, in his book, A Concise Guide to Catholic Social Teaching, describes it this way:

Perhaps the most important contribution that the Roman Catholic Church has made to the world community during the last two centuries is the development of the cohesive body of thought known as Catholic Social Teaching. Rooted in the Scriptures, particularly the proclamation of the Gospel, passionate responses to various social issues have been artic- ulated by several popes, beginning with Leo XIII at the end of the nineteenth century and continuing through the present pontificate of Francis.

Thus in the light of the Gospel and Christian faith, popes Leo XIII, Pius XI, St. John XXIII, St. Paul VI, St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis have built a body of reflec- tion upon the issues confronting society. The United States Conference of Catholic Bish- ops (USCCB) has highlighted seven themes in this body of teaching:

1. The life and dignity of the human person;

2. A call to family, community and participation;

3. Rights and responsibilities;

4. An option for the poor and vulnerable;

5. The dignity of work and the rights of workers;

6. Solidarity; and

7. Care for God’s Creation.

We will reflect upon one of these themes each evening of the Novena. The life and digni- ty of the human person will be considered on two nights.

This year our Novena is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Marvin Mich (1948 2018). Dr.

Mich was an important teacher and advocate for social justice in our community for many years, first as a professor at St. Bernard’s Institute and then at Catholic Family Center where he was Director of Advocacy and Parish Outreach. He also was Diocesan Coordi- nator for the Campaign for Human Development. His book The Challenge and Spirituali- ty of Catholic Social Teaching was published by Orbis Books (Maryknoll) in 2011.

Please join us for prayer and for reflection on important issues of our day in light of our Catholic faith. Each evening will begin at 7PM in St. Anne Church.

Grace and peace, Fr. Gary Tyman

VISITATION MINISTRY PARISH BULLETIN DESIGN

The cluster staff is working towards redesigning the bulletin to become more like a weekly newsletter with articles about parish life, ministries, and spotlighting the faith life of parishioners.

One piece we want to promote is: “How did I see God this

week?” We hope you will share your faith stories and life

events with us. The focus of any submission should be on how you saw God. For example, perhaps you trusted God with test results and something in that event made you realize “that had to be God”. Or maybe something happened in the workplace that produced a similar experience.

Unfortunately, we cannot publish everything, but we hope to build our sense of loving communion with one another and to see God in the midst of his people today.

Please submit any faith stories to Dcn. Bill Rabjohn (bill.rabjohn@dor.org) or Jennifer Cummings (Jennifer.cummings@dor.org)

Join Us In Prayer!

This is the list of parishioners, friends, and family we pray for on page 4 of every bulletin. Until now, we haven’t had much ability to know who to keep on the list and who to take off.

Starting next weekend, we’ll remove all names from the list on the first Sunday of every month unless you contact the cluster office and ask for the name to remain.

Let us know if someone has recovered from an illness, had good test results, or had a successful surgery. Perhaps that also might be a good faith story to add to “How I Saw God This Week.”

Vacation Bible School will take place August 19 23 from 9 12 at Our Lady Queen of Peace for those in grades K 6.

Cost is $25 per student. Registration forms can be found at Our Lady Queen of Peace’s website, or at Our Lady of Lourdes & St. Anne churches.

All checks should be made payable to Our Lady Queen of Peace.

If you have any questions please contact

Kristen Walsh at OLoL (473 9656) or Colleen Trevisani at OLQP/STM.
