A Word From Our Pastor

Dear Friends,

Today is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord or Candlemas

day. Traditionally, it is the day all of the candles used in church and our homes are blessed. It is a feast of Light,-Jesus,the light of the World.

In some cultures, this is the last day of Christmas. This is also Groundhog day when a large rodent named Punxsutawney Phil through a play of light and dark(shadows) predicts our winter weather. Coincidence?!?!? Along with all of this it’s Super Bowl Sunday. Seems like we can’t have a busier Sunday.

The feast we celebrate is very significant. The meaning was set into motion through the Annunciation and the birth of Jesus. Mary and Joseph presenting their first-born Son is God’s entrance into the temple. As Mary bore Christ (Theotokos) to Elizabeth (Visitation), John the Baptist, in his mother’s womb, “leapt for joy, so near was man’s salvation. Now in the temple, Simeon and Anna, having spent their lives in prayer and

expectation have their theophany, their moment. “Now Master you may dismiss you servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light to the Gentiles, and the glory of you people Israel.”(Nunc Dimitis).

With Candlemas we celebrate Jesus, the Light coming into the

world. There also is a shadow in this feast and it will precede the Light coming into the world. It is the shadow of suffering. Simeon predicts the suffering of Jesus to Mary saying, “and a sword shall pierce your

heart”. St. John Paul wrote that the words of Simeon were like a second Annunciation. At all of the moments of Jesus life, Annunciation, Nativity, Presentation and Calvary, Our Blessed Lady, always, in faith, said Yes...

Let’s not pack away Jesus the Light of the world with our Christmas decorations or let it get lost with a large rodent predicting our weather or the glitz of the Super Bowl. Let us look to the Light and with Mary, say, yes to the Peace that Jesus is.

Gratefully yours Msgr REH

In Greek 'palin dromo' means “running back again” – so putting it simply, a palindrome is a word/phrase/sentence that reads the same when read forward or backward e.g. kayak, or rotor. The date

0202 2020 is therefore a palindromic date.

Dear

Parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes -

In the midst of this dreary cold

weather, it is nice to think back to this Fall when it was hot and humid and our 6th graders had their Rite of Passage - 6th

Grade Camp! This is an amazing experience of team

building and leadership training

that helps launch our students into the

middle school experience. More will be expected of them academically and as they take on more responsibility

within the school - the camp experience gives them some much needed

time to bond as a class and learn to work together. It is amazing

how much fun our students can have and what they can learn given

a few days together

in the country . Thanks for your continued support of Our Lady of Lourdes

Presentation of the Lord February 2, 2020

For the Journey

Cathy Pressimone, Pastoral Associate, Our Lady of Lourdes

Confirmation

‘After Jesus was baptized, He came directly out of the water. Suddenly the sky opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and hover over him. With that, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son. My favor rests on Him.”’ (Mt 3: 16-17)

At this moment, for the first time in Scripture, we are shown the wholeness of God; the Trinity - God the Father, the newly baptized Son, Jesus, and the Spirit, in the form of a dove. John had foretold that while he baptized with water, the One who would come after would baptize in the Spirit. It is the Spirit that is received in its fullness during the sacrament of Confirmation.

While Baptism is the first sacrament we receive, it is one of the three sacra- ments of Initiation. The Spirit comes upon us in Baptism, but it is in Confirmation that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit;

Confirmation is “necessary for the completion of the baptismal grace…[and through] Confirmation, we are more perfectly bound to the Church and enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. [Now, as] true witnesses of Christ, [we are called to] defend and spread the faith by word and deed.” (CCC 1285)

Defend and spread the faith by word and deed. It is this notion, perhaps, that inspired my 8th grade teachers to tell us that when we were confirmed we became soldiers of Christ. This sacrament can inspire the recipient to become aware of God’s call and the understanding that we must be willing to live our faith. Not only do we receive the Spirit in Confirmation, but we also receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are not gifts given to children; these are gifts that challenge us to use our intelligence and compassion in living out our faith. These gifts call us to be the best-version of ourselves; to stand up, look Jesus directly in the eyes and say “Yes!” to all He asks.

Recall that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgement and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God’s presence.

Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with His sign; Christ the Lord has con- firmed you and placed His pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts. (St. Ambrose)

Confirmation calls us to be true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly and never to be ashamed of the Cross.

The eighth graders of Lourdes are preparing for Confirmation. Pray for them as they spend the final two weeks in prepara- tion for reception of the sacrament. Lourdes Confirmation will take place on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on Febru- ary 11.

Join Archbishop Carlson and St. Vincent de Paul Society in Supporting Medicaid Expansion

Did you know that a Missouri family of three must earn less than $4,700 per year to qualify for Medicaid coverage and that rural hospitals are closing, unsustainable with so many uninsured patients? It doesn’t have to be that way. With Medicaid Expansion, low-income working families and individuals would qualify for coverage, with the federal government paying 90% of the costs. 36 states have signed on; Missouri has not. The Catholic Bishops of Missouri are asking you to consider signing a petition to put Medicaid Expansion on the Missouri ballot as a Constitutional Amendment, believing it will help address “the unmet

healthcare needs of our working poor” and “sustain our healthcare delivery system.” Petitions are available for your signature after Mass today. Please consider signing one on your way out. For more information, visit svdpstlouis.org/what-we-do/voice

February 2, 2020 - The Presentation of the Lord

“…they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord...” (Luke 2:22)

How seriously do you take being a Catholic? Is “being Catholic” something I just do when I attend Sunday Mass or attend one of my parish functions? It’s easy to be Catho- lic then, it’s harder to be Catholic when I am out in the world. Would someone recognize you as a Catholic by the way you act, dress, and talk? How do you present yourself to the Lord and to others?
