When a t h i n d i e l e c t r i c specimen i s p l a c e d between f l a t c y l i n d r i c a l e l e c t r o d e s o f a d i a m e t e r much s m a l l e r t h a n t h a t o f t h e specimen and a l t e r n a t i n g v o l t a g e , J = 50 Hz i s a p p l i e d , c r e e p d i s c h a r g e s t a k e p l a c e i n t h e gas phase n e a r t h e s u r f a c e - T h e d i s c h a - r g e s c o n c e n t r a t e i n n a r r o w c h a n n e l s o r i e n - t e d r a d i a l l y w i t h r e s p e c t t o t h e e l e c t r o d e a n d may be r e g i s t e r e d b y means o f a p h o t o - m u l t i p l i e r ( f l a s h e s ) o r c h a r g e a m p l i f i e r
(apparent charge). S t u d y o f t h e c o n d i t i o n s i n t h e plasma c h a n n e l r e q u i r e s i n v e s t i g a - t i o n o f t h e d i s c h a r g e s e l f - s u s t a i n ance.
I n t h i s n o t e t h e p r e l i m i n a r y r e s u l t s a r e g i v e n w h i c h p r o v i d e a b a s i s f o r c h e c k i n g t h e v a l i d i t y o f ~ a s c h e n ' s l a w a s t h e s e l f - s u s t a i n a n c e c r i t e r i o n . The e l e c t r i c f i e l d i n t e n s i t y n e a r t h e e l e c t r o d e edge c a n b e a p p r o x i m a t e d by t h e q u a s i - u n i f orm f i e l d up t o t h e c r i t i c a l d i s t a n c e Ro. The c a l c u l a - t i o n s based on t h e e q u i v a l e n t c i r c u i t me- t h o d [i] ,[2] r e v e a l t h a t R i s s t r o n g l y de- p e n d e n t o n t h e dainping p a r a m e t e r
