T e s t s w e r e c a r r i e d o u t i n SF6 a t a p r e s s u r e o f 5 b a r s on a s y s t e m o f c o a x i a l c y l i n d e r s , o f w h i c h t h e i n n e r c y l i n d e r was made o f a l u m i n i u m a n d h a d a d i a m e t e r o f 2 2 . 0 mm. The o u t e r c y l i n d e r was made o f s t a i n l e s s s t e e l w i t h a d i a m e t e r o f 5 9 . 8 mm a n d h a d s u i t a b l y r o u n d e d e d g e s . The o v e r - a l l l e n g t h o f t h e c y l i n d r i c a l p a r t was 8 0 mm. The o u t e r c y l i n d e r was u s e d t h r o y g h o u t t h e e x p e r i m e n t s , b u t was c a r e f u l l y c l e a n e d a f t e r e a c h i n d i v i d u a l s p a r k , w h e r e a s t h e i n n e r c y l i n d e r s w e r e d i s c a r d e d . a s s o o n a s t h e y h a d b e e n s u b j e c t e d t o o n e s i n g l e s p a r k . R e p e a t e d u s e o f t h e o u t e r c y l i n d e r i s j u s t i f i e d by t h e f a c t t h a t t h e e l e c t r i c f i e l d n e a r i t s s u r f a c e i s s o low t h a t no i o n i z i n g p r o c e s s e s a r e p o s s i b l e . F i v e s e t s o f i n n e r c y l i n d e r s w e r e u s e d , e a c h s e t c o n - s i s t i n g o f t e n c y l i n ' d e r s w i t h a c o n s t a n t s u r f a c e r o u g h n e s s Ra. W i t h i n e a c h s e t Ra v a r i e d n o more t h a n 1 0 % . B e f o r e t e s t i n g e a c h c y l i n d e r was c a r e f u l l y c l e a n e d i n . a n u l t r a s o n i c b a t h w i t h a s u i t a b l e c l e a n i n g a g e n t . The g a s was r e n e w e d a f t e r e a c h i n -
t e s t e d a c c o r d i n g t o t h e e x p e r i m e n t a l d e - s i g n w i t h N = 1 0 0 a n d A U = 2 kV. I t i s e s s e n t i a l t h a t e a c h s a m p l e i s s u b j e c t e d t o o n e b r e a k d o w n o n l y , b e c a u s e o n e s i n g l e s p a r k w i l l i n e v i t a b l y c h a n g e t h e c o n d i t i o n s i n t h e s y s t e m .
E a c h v o l t a g e l e v e l m u s t b e r e p r o d u c e - a b l e w i t h a h i g h d e g r e e o f a c c u r a c y . T h e s e r e q u i r e m e n t s w e r e r e a d i l y met b y a n a u t o m a - t i c i m p u l s e g e n e r a t o r 1 3 1 .
F o r t h e s y s t e m u n d e r c o n s i d e r a t i o n t h e t h e o r e t i c a l b r e a k d o w n v o l t a g e U t h f o r i d e a - l i z e d e l e c t r o d e s i s 535 kV t a k i n g i n t o a c - c o u n t t h a t t h e c o m p r e s s i b i l i t y f a c t o r f o r SF6 a t 5 b a r i s 0 . 9 4 1 4 1 . The e x p e r i m e n t a l r e s u l t s a r e s u m m a r i z e d i n T a b l e 1.
