Abstract. - Recently D. W. Fox and the author have shown that a bound for

the error between the expectation value of a self-adjoint operator B on an eigenfunction V/ of a self-adjoint Haniiltonian H = - A + V and the value given by an approxi~iiating vector p, can be obtained by use of point and asymptotic esti~iiates for y. In the case of one-electron molecular systems with fixed nuclei, asymptotic estimates for tp were obtained by estimating V-E (E a negative eigenvalue) by a suitable radially sy~n~iietric function f that satisfies

and then obtaining radially symmetric solutions of the corresponding differential equation. The problem remained of estimating iy on the sphere I r I = Ro.
Here Sobolev inequalities together with the eigenvalue problem are employed to obtain the desired estimates for y when I r I = Ro. T h e estimation is in a form which allowsri gorous numeri- cal application to one-electron niolecular systems. Further investigations of the procedure are being carried out jointly with H. Fankhauser.
