Carbonaceous o v e r l a v e r s on t r a n s i t i o n m e t a l c r y s t a l s p l a y a n i a p o r t a n t r o l e i n h e t e r o g e n e o u s c a t a l y s i s . The o v e r l a y e r c a r b o n c a n e r i s t i n two s t a t e s :

i ) t h e c a t a l y t i c a l l y a c t i v e " c a r b i d i c carbon" and

i i ) t h e " g r a p h i t i c carbon", which a c t s a s a c a t a l y s t p o i s o n 11-31.

S i n r e t h e apex a r e a of f i e l d e m i t t e r s i s well s u i t e d t o model l a r g e r , rounded c a t a l y s t c r y s t a l s , t h e f i e l d e m i s s i o n microscope (FM) was used t o s t u d y che proper-.

2. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

I n t h e p r e s e n t i n v e s t i g a t i o n s , p r i m a r i l y t h e FEM was u t i l i z e d . I t s s e t - u p a s w e l l a s t h e e x p e r i m e n t a l p r o c e d u r e s have been d e s c r i b e d i n d e t a i l i n r e c e n t p a p e r s / 4 , 5 / . A d d i t i o n a l s t u d i e s were c a r r i e d o u t w i t h a h i g h r e s o l u t i o n s c a n n i n g Auger n i c r o p r o b e ( P h y s i c a l E l e c t r o n i c s , Model 595) w i t h s c a n n i n g e l e c t r o n microscope (SEN) c a p a b i l i t i a s . During a l l e x p e r i m e n t s , t h e r e s i d u a l g a s p r e s s u r e was i n t h e 10--1° t o 10-'I1 T o r r r a n g e . The e m i t t e r s were p r e p a r e d f r o n 99.999% p u r e p l a t i n u m w i r e s (Sig- mund Cohn C o r p o r a t i o n [SCC] and N a t e r i a l s Research C o r p o r a t i o n [MKC]), by e l e c t r o - l y t i c e t c h i n g I n a n aquecus s o l u t i o n of KCN.

3 . EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

When e l e c t r o p o l i s h e d and UW a n n e a l e d p l a t i n u m e m i t t e r s , which i n i t i a l l y showed a n ?EM-clean s u r f a c e , a r e a n n e a l e d t o a b o u t 870 K , s t r o n g l y e m i t t i n g i s l a n d s form 1-andom1.y i n t h e h i g h M i l l e r i n d e x a r e a s . The i s l a n d d e n s i t y i s 3 X 10' cmd2. Upon f u r t h e r h e a t i n g , t h e i s l a n d s grow and t h e i s l a n d d e n s i t y d e c r e a s e s t o a b o u t 2 X

The f a s t e r growth a l o n g t h e <112> zone g i v e s t h e s e i s l a n d s a d u m b e l l - l i k e a p p e a r a n c e . With i n c r e a s i n g t e m p e r a t u r e , growth o c c u r s i n t h e o t h e r v i c i n a l a r e a s ( i n c l u d i n g t h e

< l o o > z o n e ) and o n t h e u n s t e p p e d { I 1 0 1 p l a n e i t s e l f . The ( 1 1 0 ) l a y e r s may become r e l a t i v e l y l a r g e i f t h e growth c o n d i t i o n s a r e f a v o r a b l e . They may c o v e r t h e h i g h Miller a r e a s around [0121 and r e a c h i n t o (1111 and { l o o ) . Some o f t h e l a r g e i s l a n d s show w e l l d e v e l o p e d e d g e s and c o r n e r s . I n t h e h i g h M i l l e r i n d e x a r e a s , t h e i s l a n d s c a u s e a work f u n c t i o n d e c r e a s e o f 1 . 6 eV / 6 / . Over t h e 1110) p l a n e , t h e work func- t i o n i s i n c r e a s e d o n l y s l i g h t l y i f t h e r e i s no a d s o r p t i o n o f o t h e r i m p u r i t i e s 161.

I f i m p u r i t i e s o t h e r t h a n c a r b o n a r e f a c e s p e c i f i c a l l y p r e a d s o r b e d on {110}, t h e work f u n c t i o n i n c r e a s e c a n b e pronounced / 7 / . Upon h e a t i n g , t h e l a r g e l a y e r s r e c e d e f i ~ s t from [ I l l ) and t h e n from [1001, and form e l o n g a t e d i s l a n d s a l o n g t h e < l o o > zone. At a b o u t 1 2 0 0 K t h e l a y e r i s s t a b l e o n l y on {110). I t d i s s o l v e s c o m p l e t e l y above 1400 K.

A n a l y s e s o f e m i t t e r s by UHV-SEM a l s o show t h e random f o r m a t i o n o f i s l a n d s upon a n n e a l i n g a t a b o u t 870 K. Again, a n i s l a n d d e n s i t y o f 3 X

cm-2 is o b s e r v e d . A n a l y s e s by AES show a n i n c r e a s e o f t h e c a r b o n peak (272 eTJ) when t h e i s l a n d s a p p e a r . Some i s l a n d s were found i n e t c h p i t s . An AES c a r b o n l i n e s c a n (272 eV) showed t h e c a r b o n d e p o s i t t o be l i m i t e d t o t h e e t c h p i t a r e a s . 4 . DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

The FEM i n v e s t i g a t i o n s show t h e f o r m a t i o n o f two t y p e s o f i s l a n d s :

i ) i s l a n d s formed randomly i n t h e h i g h M i l l e r i n d e x a r e a s (random i s l a n d s ) and

i i ) i s l a n d s formed f a c e s p e c i f i c a l l y i n t h e a r e a o f {110} ( f a c e s p e c i f i c is- l a n d s ) .

A n a l y s i s by AES shows t h a t t h e i s l a n d s a r e composed of c a r b o n . The e m i s s i o n i n c r e a s e (work f u n c t i o n d e c r e a s e ) i n d i c a t e s t h e e x i s t e n c e of g r a p h i t i c c a r b o n , C a r b i d i c c a r b o n would c a u s e a work f u n c t i o n i n c r e a s e , and c o u l d n o t be o b s e r v e d .

S i n c e t h e d e n s i t y of t h e random i s l a n d s a g r e e s w i t h t h e d i s l o c a t i o n d e n s i t y , one h a s t o assume t h a t upon h e a t i n g , c a r b o n d i s s o l v e d i n t h e p l a t i n u m b u l k d i f f u s e s a l o n g d i s l o c a t i o n p i p e s . Upon r a p i d quenching i t n u c l e a t e s o n t h e s u r f a c e a t t h e e x i t p o i n t s o f d i s l o c a t i o n s . The d i s c o v e r y of c a r b o n i s l a n d s i n e t c h p i t s , s u p p o r t s t h i s a s s u m p t i o n .

When a t e l e v a t e d t e m p e r a t u r e s c a r b o n c a n b e d i s t r i b u t e d a l o n g t h e s u r f a c e by s u r f a c e d i f f u s i o n , n u c l e a t i o n and i n i t i a l g r o w t h o f f a c e s p e c i f i c g r a p h i t e l a y e r s c a n be o b s e r v e d i n t h e v i c i n a l a r e a of { 1 1 0 ) . A c a l c u l a t i o n o f t h e m i s f i t - f o r g r a p h i t e {00011 o n p l a t i n u m {1101 shows t h e b e s t e p i t a x i a l f i t f o r g r a p h i C e <1120>

Using t h e above mentioned b e s t e p i t a x i a l f i t , t h e m i s f i t a l o n g t h e < l o o > , t h e <112>, and t h e <110> zone was c a l c u - l a t e d f o r d i r e c t i o n s p a r a l l e l

t o t h e s t e p e d g e s and p e r p e n d i c u l a r t o t h e s t e p e d g e s . The f o l l o w i n g v a l u e s were o b t a i n e d : < l o o > zone, (11) 8 . 6 % , -11.3%;

<112> zone, (11) 2.3%. (L) -37.3%; <110> z o n e , ((1) -11.3%, (L) 8.6 %. S i n c e t h e e x p e r i m e n t a l l y o b s e r v e d growth r a t e is f a s t e s t a l o n g t h e <112> zone, s l o w e r a l o n g t h e < l O O > z o n e and s l o w e s t a l o n g t h e <110> z o n e , i t a p p e a r s t h a t t h e growth r a t e i n t h e v i c i n a l a r e a i s d e t e r m i n e d by t h e e p i t a x i a l f i t p a r a l l e l t o t h e s t e p e d g e s . The s e q u e n c e o f t h e s e m i s f i t v a l u e s , 2.3% (<112> z o n e ) < 8.6% ( < l o o > z o n e ) < -11.3%

(<110> z o n e ) , p r o p e r l y r e f l e c t s t h e o b s e r v e d g r o w t h r a t e s . H i g h e r s u p e r s a t u r a t i o n s a r e r e q u i r e d t o o b t a i n growth i n t h e v i c i n a l a r e a a l o n g t h e <110> zone and o n t h e I1101 p l a n e i t s e l f .

The e d g e s which h a v e been o b s e r v e d on l a r g e r g r a p h i t e l a y e r s c a n b e used f o r a n e x p e r i m e n t a l d e t e r m i n a t i o n of t h e g r a p h i t e l a y e r o r i e n t a t i ~ n . Using a broken-bond model and a p p l y i n g ~ u l f f ' s Law 191, one f i n d s t h a t t h e <1120> edge ( " z i g z a g edge")

s h o u l d be t h e d o m i n a t i n g edge and t h a t t h e < l o r n > edge ( " c h a i r " o r "armchair" e d g e ) s h o u l d o c c u r o n l y o n growth o r d i s s o l u t i o n f o r m s o r when i t s e d g e f r e e e n e r g y i s s u f f i c i e n t l y lowered by a d s o r p t i o n o r i n t e r a c t i o n w i t h t h e s u b s t r a t e . Assuming,

F u r t h e r e x p e r i m e n t s a n d model c a l c u l a t i o n s a r e r e q u i r e d t o d e t e r m i n e w h e t h e r o r n o t t h e i n t e r a c t i o n b e t w e e n g r a p h i t e a n d p l a t i n u m i s l i m i t e d t o t h i s d i p o l e i n t e r a c t i o n . I n s u r f a c e e x t e n d e d e n e r g y - l o s s f i n e - s t r u c t u r e (SEELFS) e x p e r i m e n t s o n t h e s y s t e m s g r a p h i t e l n i c k e l ( 1 1 1 ) and g r a p h i t e l n i c k e l { 1 1 0 ) , f o r e x a m p l e , i t was found t h a t g r a p h i t i c c a r b o n o n ( 1 1 1 1 b e h a v e s s i m i l a r l y t o g r a p h i t e s i n g l e c r y s t a l s , w h i l e a g r a p h i t e l a y e r o n { I 1 0 1 s t r o n g l y i n t e r a c t s w i t h t h e n i c k e l s u b s t r a t e

The a b o v e d e s c r i b e d f a c e s p e c i f i c f o r m a t i o n o f g r a p h i t e l a y e r s on p l a t i n u m { I 1 0 1 h a s b e e n o b s e r v e d a l s o when h y d r o c a r b o n s a r e c r a c k e d by h e a t i n g i n t h e a p p r o - p r i a t e t e m p e r a t u r e r a n g e . F o r e x a m p l e , Kojima e t a l . 1111 found a f o r m a t i o n o f

{ 1 1 0 1 l a y e r s a f t e r h e a t i n g p l a t i n u m f i e l d e m i t t e r s w i t h a d s o r b e d a c e t y l e n e t o 1 1 1 0 K .

5. SUMMARY

I n i t i a l n u c l e a t i o n o f c a r b o n o c c u r s o n d i s l o c a t i o n s i n t h e c u r v e d h i g h M i l l e r i n d e x a r e a s . Above 1 1 5 0 K t h e s e r a n d o m l y d i s t r i b u t e d i s l a n d s d i s s o l v e a n d f a c e s p e c i f i c l a y e r s a r e formed o n {110}. T h e s e l a y e r s c a n e x t e n d i n t o n e i g h b o r i n g c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c a r e a s w h e r e t h e y a r e , however, l e s s s t a b l e .
