The s o l i d - s o l i d p h a s e c h a n g e i n i r o n was f i r s t d i s c o v e r e d i n s h o c k wave e x p e r i m e n t s , b u t p o s i t i v e i d e n t i f i c a - t i o n of t h e h i g h p r e s s u r e p h a s e r e q u i r e d X-ray d i f f r a c t i o n a t s t a t i c p r e s s u r e . C u r r e n t l y t h e m o s t w i d e l y u s e d p r e s s u r e s c a l e is b a s e d on t h e s h i f t o f t h e r u b y f l u o r e s c e n c e l i n e . I n s u c h a r e a s a s e q u a t i o n - o f - s t a t e , p h a s e d i a g r a m s , t r a n s p o r t p r o p e r t i e s , and e l e c t r o n i c s t r u c t u r e t h e o v e r l a p o f s t a t i c and dynamic c o m p r e s s i o n methods v i l 1 r e m a i n s.lirong f o r many y e a r s t o come. A t p r e s s u r e s a b o v e 100 GPa i n s o l i d s o r 10 GPa i n c o m p r e s s i b l e f l u i d s s u c h a s N2, s h o c k wave t e c h n i q u e s p r o d u c e S t a t e s a t s u c t i h i g h t e m p e r a t u r e s t h a t t h e d a t a a r e complemeritary r a t h e r t h a n o v e r l a p p i n g s t a t i c d a t a . Advances i n l a s e r h e a t i n g i n t h e diamond a n v i l c e 1 1 and t h e a s s o - c i a t e d c a l i b r a t i o n s rnay r e s u l t s i n u s e f u l o v e r l a p o f e x p e r i m e n t s a t a v e n h i g h e r p ; e s s u r e s i n t h e f u t u r e . A t p r e s s u r e s below 1 0 GPa i n s o l i d s , t h e dynamic expe- r i m e n t s a r e p r i m a r i l y a d d r e s s e d 10 p r o b l e m s o f p l a s t i c f l o w , y i e l d s t r e n g t t i s , and s t r a i n - r a t e e f f e c t s on t h e r m o - m e c h a n i c a l p r o p e r t i e s . These p r o p e r t i e s , d e p e n d e n t on s t r a i n - r a t e a r e u s i i a l l y o u t s i d e t t i e r a n g e o f i n t e r e s t f o r s t a t i c h i g h p r e s s u r e work.
One v e r y f r u i t f u l a r e a o f o v e r l a p o f s t a t i c a n d dynamic t e c h n i q u e s which i s now d e v e l o p i n g i s ttie u s e o f o p t i c a l s c a t t e r i n g t o l o o k a t m o l e c u l a r p r o p e r t i e s . t l e r e , s t a t i c h i g h p r e s s u r e t e c h n i q i i ~ s c a n be u s e d t o e s t a b l i s h e q u i l i b r i u m p r o - p e r t i e s o f t h e m o l e c u l a r s y s t e m s , and t o s u g g e s t i n t e r e s t i n g m e a s u r e m e n t s f o r dyna- m i c c o m p r e s s i o n p r o c e s s e s . S i m i l a r m e a s u r e m e n t s on d y n a m i c a l l y c o m p r e s s e d s y s t e m s may t h e n b e m o s t u s e f u l f o r l o o k i n g a t t h e k i n e t i c s o f e q u i l i b r a t i o n and a t r e a c - t i o n p a t h s , w h i c h may be v e r y d i f f e r e n t f o r c o n d e n s e d p h a s e s h o c k e d s y s t e m s t h a n f o r low d e n s i t y s t e a d y s y s t e m s .
Over t h e p a s t d e c a d e , t h e r a n g e OF d i r e c t o v e r l a p b e t w e e n d y n a m i c and s t a t i c h i g h p r e s s u r e m e a s u r e m e n t s h a s b e e n e x t e n d e d Lo t h e 100 GPa r a n g e . V h e r e d a t a c a n be d i r e c t l y compared t h e a g r e e m e n t a p p e a r s t o be w e l l w i t h i n t h e 1 0 % u n c e r t a i n t y r a n g e . More d i r e c t c o m p a r i s o n s w i l l be p a r t i c u l a r l y u s e f u l f o r r e m o v i n g r e m a i n i n g d o u b t s and u n c e r t a i n t i e s i n a l 1 t h e e x p e r i m e r i t a l t e c h n i q u e s i n u s e . P e r h a p s t h e most u s e f u l d i r e c t i o n f o r t h e n e x t d e c a d e w i l l be t o u s e and compare t h e v a r i o u s t e c h n i q u e s i n o r d e r t o e s t a b l i s h t h o s e f e a t u r e s , s u c h a s r a p i d h e a t i n y r a t e s , w h i c h may be u n i q u e f o r a p a r t i c u l a r c o m p r e s s i o n method.
