Whom might you see if affl icted with a sports injury?

T

he National Physician Survey (NPS) asked fam- ily physicians and other specialists whether sports medicine was part of their practice (Figure 1). While 22% of family physicians with a CCFP designation reported involvement in sports medicine, 39% of second-year family medicine res- ident respondents reported an intention to prac- tise sports medicine. While 1% of all other specialist respondents reported involvement in sports medi- cine, 4% of second-year resident respondents from all other specialties reported an intention to practise sports medicine.

The 2004 NPS is a unique collaborative project of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the

Canadian Medical Association, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. National-level estimates are considered accurate within ±0.7% and

±4.0%, 19 times out of 20, for physicians and second- year medical residents, respectively. Detailed national analyses of the 2004 NPS results are available on the NPS website at www.nps-snm.ca.
