I n t r o d u c t i o n . - The n a t u r e o f t h e p h a s e t r a n s i t i o n s i n t h e g r o u p Vb m e t a l-
h y d r o g e n s y s t e m s has been e x t e n s i v e l y i n v e s t i g a t e d w i t h a number o f e x p e r i m e n t a l t e c h n i q u e s ( 1 ) . H y d r o g e n b e h a v i o r i n t h e e x t e n s i v e r a n g e o fa
a n d a' s o l i d s o l u t i o n s i n Nb has been i n t e r p r e t e d u s i n g a l a t t i c e gas model w h e r e t h e H i n t e r a c t i o n s a r e t r e a t e d i n t h e mean f i e l d a p p r o x i m a t i o n ( 2 ) . T h i s t r e a t m e n t c a n a c c o u n t f o r t h e e x i s t e n c e o f t h e a - a - m i s c i b i l i t y gap ( 3 ) as w e l l a s f o r m i c r o s c o p i c a n d m a c r o s c o p i c modes ( 4 - 7 ) . A t h i g h H c o n c e n t r a t i o n s a s e r i e s of h y d r i d e s t r u c t u r e s corm, whose a p p e a r a n c e h a s been a t t r i b u t e d t o t h e H-H d i p o l a r i n t e r a c t i o n s ( 8 ) . . I n t h e p r e s e n t p a p e r we r e p o r t on p a r t o f an i n v e s t i g a t i o n o f t h e s e p h a s e t r a n s i t i o n s u s i n g m e a s u r e m e n t s o f a c o u s t i c a t t e n u a t i o n a n d e l a s t i c c o n s t a n t s , w h i c h i n p r e v i o u s s t u d i e s had o n l y been i n v e s t i g a t e d f o r v a l u e s o f t h e a t o m i c r a t i on
e q u a l t o 0.78 ( 9 ) a n d l e s s t h a n a b o u t 0.05 ( 1 0 - 1 2 ) . 2. E x p e r i m e n t a l.-
M e a s u r e m e n t s w e r e c a r r i e d o u t on s i n g l e c r y s t a l s h a v i n g p o l i s h e d f a c e s p a r a 1 l e l t o[ l o o ]
a n d [ 1 1 0 ] c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c p l a n e s . T h e s e c r y s t a l s had b e e n a n n e a l e d a t 2173 K i n a vacuum o f a b o u t Pa f o r p u r i f i c a t i o n .H
was i n t r o d u c e d a t 528 K t h r o u g h a s p u t t e r c l e a n e d a n d Pd e v a p o r a t e d s u r f a c e o f t h e Nb c r y s t a l . T r a n s d u c e r s w e r e b o n d e d t o t h e t h r e e o r t h o g o n a l f a c e s o f t h e c r y s t a l a l l o w i n g m e a s u r e m e n t o f t h e Cll, CL = 1 / 2 (Cll+
C12 + 2 C 4 4 ) , I a n d C = 1 / 2 (Cll-

The a b o v e v a l u e s f o r r 0 a n d W a r e i n good a g r e e m e n t w i t h NMR m e a s u r e m e n t s o f H m o b i l i t y i n t h e a' p h a s e . F o r a c o m p l e t e l y random s o l i d s o l u t i o n , Eq. ( 9 ) r e d u c e s t o 2 2 b o = yn ( I - n ).
( 5 ) F i g u r e 6 shows t h a t t h e e x p e r i m e n t a l d a t a , e x c e p t f o r n = 0.31 f i t t h i s r e l a t i o n , s u g g e s t i n g t h a t i n t h e t e m p e r a t u r e r a n g e o f t h e p r e s e n t m e a s u r e m e n t s t h e s o l i d s o l u t i o n i s e s s e n t i a l l y random. 5. C o n c l u s i o n s . - A l l t h e e x p e r i m e n t a l o b s e r v a t i o n s a p p e a r t o be i n good a g r e e m e n t w i t h t h e Z e n e r r e l a x a t i o n m e c h a n i s m i n t h e c o m p o s i t i o n r a n g e a b o v e H/Nb = 0.31. N e a r t h e c r i t i c a l c o m p o s i t i o n f o r t h e a-a' t r a n s i t i o n h o w e v e r , t h e b e h a v i o r a p p e a r s t o b e more c o m p l e x as t h e r e l a x a t i o n s t r e n g t h i s c o n s i d e r a b l y s m a l l e r t h a n p r e d i c t e d a n d t h e v a l u e o f TS i s s i g n i f i c a n t l y h i g h e r t h a n o b t a i n e d by e x t r a p o l a t i o n f r o m t h e h i g h e r c o m p o s i t i o n s .A c k n o w l e d g e m e n t s . - T h i s work was s u p p o r t e d by DOE c o n t r a c t OE-AC-2- 76ER01198.
