h y d r o g e n s y s t e m s has been e x t e n s i v e l y i n v e s t i g a t e d w i t h a number o f e x p e r i m e n t a l t e c h n i q u e s ( 1 ) . H y d r o g e n b e h a v i o r i n t h e e x t e n s i v e r a n g e o f

a

a n d a' s o l i d s o l u t i o n s i n Nb has been i n t e r p r e t e d u s i n g a l a t t i c e gas model w h e r e t h e H i n t e r a c t i o n s a r e t r e a t e d i n t h e mean f i e l d a p p r o x i m a t i o n ( 2 ) . T h i s t r e a t m e n t c a n a c c o u n t f o r t h e e x i s t e n c e o f t h e a - a - m i s c i b i l i t y gap ( 3 ) as w e l l a s f o r m i c r o s c o p i c a n d m a c r o s c o p i c modes ( 4 - 7 ) . A t h i g h H c o n c e n t r a t i o n s a s e r i e s of h y d r i d e s t r u c t u r e s corm, whose a p p e a r a n c e h a s been a t t r i b u t e d t o t h e H-H d i p o l a r i n t e r a c t i o n s ( 8 ) . . I n t h e p r e s e n t p a p e r we r e p o r t on p a r t o f an i n v e s t i g a t i o n o f t h e s e p h a s e t r a n s i t i o n s u s i n g m e a s u r e m e n t s o f a c o u s t i c a t t e n u a t i o n a n d e l a s t i c c o n s t a n t s , w h i c h i n p r e v i o u s s t u d i e s had o n l y been i n v e s t i g a t e d f o r v a l u e s o f t h e a t o m i c r a t i o

C o n c l u s i o n s . - A l l t h e e x p e r i m e n t a l o b s e r v a t i o n s a p p e a r t o be i n good a g r e e m e n t w i t h t h e Z e n e r r e l a x a t i o n m e c h a n i s m i n t h e c o m p o s i t i o n r a n g e a b o v e H/Nb = 0.31. N e a r t h e c r i t i c a l c o m p o s i t i o n f o r t h e a-a' t r a n s i t i o n h o w e v e r , t h e b e h a v i o r a p p e a r s t o b e more c o m p l e x as t h e r e l a x a t i o n s t r e n g t h i s c o n s i d e r a b l y s m a l l e r t h a n p r e d i c t e d a n d t h e v a l u e o f TS i s s i g n i f i c a n t l y h i g h e r t h a n o b t a i n e d by e x t r a p o l a t i o n f r o m t h e h i g h e r c o m p o s i t i o n s .
