A n i t r o g e n pumped, g r a z i n g incidence dye l a s e r has been designed w i t h a f u l l y dedicated microprocessor c o n t r o l l e r . One o f t h e primary tasks o f t h e processor i s t o determine t h e dye l a s e r o u t p u t wavelength and t o m a i n t a i n t h e c o r r e c t wavelength w h i l e scanning.
For t h i s purpose, a f r a c t i o n o f t h e l a s e r o u t p u t i s d i v e r t e d t o a small neon g1 ow discharge l amp which i s monitored f o r resonant opto-galvanic responses associated w i t h atomic neon. As t h e l a s e r i s tuned, t h e responses are c o r r e l a t e d w i t h t h e p r e c i s e l y known opto-galvanic spectrum which i s catalogued i n memory. On resonance, the wavelength i s known w i t h an accu'racy e q u i v a l e n t t o t h e l a s e r l i n e w i d t h . Between resonances, t h e wavelength can be i n t e r p o l a t e d w i t h good p r e c i s i o n .
The lamp i s operated from a constant v o l t a g e source w i t h a b a l l a s t r e s i s t o r i n s e r i e s . O f f resonance, t h e lamp i s i n s e n s i t i v e t o t h e l a s e r i l l u m i n a t i o n .

Resonant a b s o r p t i o n by e x c i t e d s t a t e neon atoms induces a v o l t a g e change across t h e discharge which decays w i t h a c h a r a c t e r i s t i c t i m e o f approximate- l y 5 0 p s e c . The induced v o l t a g e p u l s e may be e i t h e r p o s i t i v e o r n e g a t i v e , depending on t h e l i f e t i m e o f t h e lower s t a t e o f t h e neon t r a n s i t i o n . Twenty f i v e d i s c r e t e t r a n s i t i o n s a r e a v a i l a b l e i n t h e s p e c t r a l r e g i o n between 580 and 800 nmeter, a l t h o u g h some o f t h e s e a r e o f l o w i n t e n s i t y .
